Pulled the flywheel. Seal on that side appeared to be partially pushed out so I suspect responders were correct in that diagnosis. I got the seal out and appears it had some sort of sealant around it. What would be good to use there? Haven't gotten the clutch off yet to check seal there. Trying to figure out how to hold motor to unscrew clutch. Couldn't find any cracks or tears in carb Thanks for all the advice and whatever else you can help me with. mounting boot so probably seals.

The first Stihl I had came with a tool kit including a device that screwed into the spark pug hole to rest against the top of the piston. This tool may not work on your saw

use a 3/8 inch impact never use a 1/2inch they bend connecting rods and break crankshafts. the clutch usually has backwards threads

Some seals have a colored sealant around the outer edge. If you get the new seal from Stihl it will probably have this. Clean the old sealant out of the seal recess.

the rope trick down the sparkplug hole works good but its left handed thread hit it with the impact

guess I was just tightening it up, didn't realize it had LH threads. I did have 3/8 impact on it. I'll try the rope trick
thanks for all the responses
