John Deere 6620 sidehill sometimes slow or no level action

I had posted this on the combine site but had not gotten any responses. So, I will try here. Sometimes I notice that my John Deere 6620 will not level itself as it should. When you hit the rocker switch for tilting left or right it tilts immediately. In fact if you hit the rocker switch and tilt the combine most of one way or the other it sometimes kicks the automatic leveling into action. I noticed when I was turning around on some steep end rows it would level immediately. I wonder if the pendulum in the box under the throat is sort of hanging up or the electrical contacts need cleaning. Question is what goes on in that box and how should it be maintained? Thanks guys.

Don't know about your model, but the older hillside machines were strictly mechanical as far as the self leveling was concerned. A cable wrapped around a pulley, with heavy weights on both ends, hanging down, and the leveling is simply gravity. No electrical connections as all. The tilt function is electrical, but completely independent of the self leveling. I suspect there's crud in the pulley and the cable is hanging up.

The leveling box on a JD 6620 combine is electronic inside. Nothing to maintain. All the dealerships around here had the test boxes you would hook to the leveling box to test it. We used to keep a few parts for them but in the last twenty years we just send them to Ag Express and let them repair the boxes. I have a box on the shelf off a scrap combine. I just switch it out and send the other one to be repaired. Usually not more than $100.

I would try cleaning the connections at the electric solenoids on the hydraulic level control valve. If they are corroded they can make it respond funny. The manual switch in the cab will send full voltage as the harness is shorter and less to go wrong.

There is a pendulum in the box with a vacuum dash pot or cylinder to keep it from bouncing, that dash pot is sticking,,you can pull the cover and lube it. When you hit the Manuel switch it over rides the box on the axle..
