336 baler axle

I was baling hay couple days ago, JD 336 baler. The axle on the plunger head side broke off. Had a fatigue crack about 30% and broke the rest as I was driving across the field to hook up to the next empty wagon. I have 2 balers, so pulled the entire axle extension assembly off, swapped them out and was back running in about 1 hour. The axle is welded in. JD parts does NOT show the assembly as available, but lists the axle. So, I ordered the high floatation 6 bolt hub one. Yesterday, I cut off the broken one, ground the welds down and hammered out the stub. Plan to weld in the new axle when it arrives. Anyone had to do this? In contrast, the pickup side axle slides in and has a bolt keeper. Why this side welds in I do not know. Bad engineering? By the way, the axle is very expensive. I would normally look for used parts at this price but I would probably be buying a fatigue crack again. Not worth the risk.

Here I am, running again about 1 hour later. Loader tractor in the background was used to hoist baler up and carry the tools and parts. Without a 2nd baler, I would have lost 150 bales as rain was coming. That 2nd baler is the best insurance policy I bought. Many times over.

Nothing like having parts/parts machine around,I try to have at least 1 parts machine for every thing I rely on.Must explain why I have 8 NH 851 balers(LOL)With the price of new parts
these days a parts machine can be bought lots of times for the price of a small part.

Glad that you were able to deal with the problem. For future reference in case you get into something not quite as easily solved Finger Lakes Equipment in Penn Yan, NY specializes in used parts for 3XX JD balers. The phone number is 585-526-6705 Mon-Sat.

I have not had that issue with my 336, but I will be checking the axle this winter when I go through it. When I put tires on mine, the co-op tire guy recommended the higher ply tire, he says lots of guys underestimate the weight carried by a baler and use under-duty tires.
