Belt drives

When did tractor manufacturers quit offering belt drives? My dad had old equipment, so all our tractors had belts. I think we weree the only ones in the neighborhood who had anything belt driven when I was a teenager.

I am assuming flat belt driven implements??? I would say the mid to late 1950s. The 540 PTO was universally standard by then. The effects of WWII where over on production so new items could easily be bought if you had the money. I do not miss flat belts at all. Corn shellers, corn recutters and etc.

If I'm not mistaken they were still available for a Deere 4020 during the 60's. I'm not aware of anything later.

MM had models into the late 60's that could have a belt pulley. That being the mounting hole was there, the pulley unit was the same across many models and years.

Case had the mount for a belt pully on the 7/830 dry clutch through the comfort king series, so til 68. I'm not sure if they still made the gear and pully that long tho, but the pully from older tractors bolted on. A rear gearbox that bolted over the pto was available as well.

Had a young farmer move in down the road from me. Met him when he worked in the parts department at John Deere. So he ask me one day why does of all the old tractors JD is the only one you see with belt pulleys. Told him JD made the only tractor you couldn't remove it. Lot of belt pulleys laying in the corner of sheds.

My Dad and brother bought a new CIH 495 about 1992 to replace an IH 384 and part of the deal was it had to have a belt pulley as they had a 3pt buzz saw that ran off the belt pulley on the PTO of the 384. The deal found a new belt pulley for a 54/74/84 series tractor at another CIH dealer and it ran of the 1000 RPM PTO. Then it was discovered it ran in the opposite direction than the 384 belt pulley and there was no room to do a cross on the belt for the buzz saw. Solution was Dad took 495 and pulley from 384 to local welding shop and he made an adapter for 495 that allowed 384 pulley to go on 540 PTO on 495.

So belt pulley for IH/CIH 54/74/84/95 series tractor was still available in early 1990s.

Yes a friend of mine has a 4020 with belt pulley. Its a nice conversation piece at our antique tractor club showings

I was looking at tractor data, and it seemed that the ratings for belt horse power stopped some where around 1960. That got me thinking about it. Some where we transitioned from belts to PTO shafts, and reached a point where there was no point in making machines with the pully on the side. Just as with so many advances in equipment, we went from stationary machines to pulled, to self propelled. Those old pullies are nostalgic. And dangerous.

I have a belt pulley that went on the back of my dad's jd 4010. I've never seen it on the tractor because it's been sitting in the barn since before I was born.
