Without looking it up,I'm gonna say 1966 or 67? I can remember being in Dad's 66 Chevy pickup and hearing it on the radio.
 
You hit it on the head for me......Cheiftians version is the best. Their music adds a haunting sound that really brings out the emotions of the song. Jagger does a good job.
 
I've never heard a Lefty Frizzell song that I didn't like.

Wouldn't that be something to see from the first person perspective?
