Ford 650 External Valve and Filter Modification for 3 poi...

Looking for information on converting my
1955 Ford 650 tractor to an external valve
and filter for the three-point hydraulics.
I have had nothing but trouble with the
lift cover since I've had it and the
Hydraulics have never worked right, I've
been in it once and paid someone to go in
there and now it's messed up again. wanting
to bypass all that and put an external
valve on it, saw it done on a internet
video and look like a good job and it
worked well. It doesn't go too deep in
Technical advice and was wondering if
anyone has done this and what the pros and
cons are. I pretty much am understanding
the plumbing part of it and that a special
plate has to be made but the guy in the
video talked about removing the factory
valve that's inside the lift cover and I'm
wondering if anything needs to be plugged
or bypassed. Also he used a single spool
valve and I'm wondering if you could put a
double spool and run a remote along with it
for a hydraulic top link or whatever you
may need. Any information would be much
appreciated, thank you for your help.

Well there would not be any way to make the tractor have draft control with an external valve. As for doing it. You can do just about anything with a good machine shop and money/time.

I assume they would get through the transmission housing where the external plate would be for rear hydraulics. The inside would have to be modified so that you could get oil to the lift piston and then oil flow up to the external valve.

The simplest thing would be to fix the factory controls correctly. There where hundreds of thousands of Ford tractors built with that type of lift and control. So the system is very proven. They are not hard to repair IF you make sure everything is in spec. Anything loose or worn and it will not work right no matter how you adjust it.

Thanks for the reply JD. I don't mind losing the draft control because I only use the tractor for brush mowing and box blade work. I wanted to put remote hydraulics on the tractor and thought by converting and adding a multi spool valve would give me the option to have a hydraulic side link and top link and a remote and have that same valve operate the three-point. I do a lot of box blade work and it would be wonderful to have a 3-way power box blade.

For the time and effort required to do what your wanting I would just look for a newer Ford 3000 gas. About the same size and easy to put remote valves on. They are not selling that high around me. $2500-3500 would get you a good one. Your tractor should bring $1500ish if it is good. So your not talking big money to update.

What is the problem you're having with the 3 pt lift? Are you
having that problem in draft mode, position control mode or both?

Remote hydraulics, single or dual, meaning two or four hoses,
are a readily available, bolt on option with no modifications.

When I pull the hand control lever it
doesn't even make contact until three
quarters of the way up and start lifting
and then there's only about an inch and a
half travel to full lift. The hydraulic
cylinder bleeds off and slowly creeps down.
And after the tractors has set it's losing
its prime and takes almost a full minute
for the Hydraulics to start working. I know
it needs a cam follower pin for sure but
can't find one anywhere.

That is an option, but I couldn't get rid
of my tractor, it's very special to me. Wow
I don't know where you're located but I'm
in Oklahoma and a good Ford 3000 is about
3500 to 4000. My tractor goes for about
2500 to 3000 for a real real good one. I
paid 2500 for it 7 years ago.

The touch control handle travel sounds like draft control mode
and/or cam follower pin as you mentioned. They are available.
There is a common pin that will work but I forget the size.
If you ask on the Ford forum here on YT, someone will know off hand.
The other issues may be perforated hydraulic lines inside the
transmission. Have you checked those and the manifold to the pump?

Thanks for the info. I remember last time I
had the lift cover off the tube that runs
up the side looked okay I didn't notice
anything else. I've never used the draft
control. I am getting a little leaking
around the hydraulic pump manifold and just
noticed a new drip coming from the big hex
head on the front of the pump, which I'm
guessing is part of the relief valve it's a
Vane pump. It's not a bad leak it's just
real small drips on both.

YOU need to research the current market. The value of a Ford 650 would be less today then 7 years ago. Not near as many buyers. The younger fellows are buy new compact tractors and not fooling with old iron.

Also look at actual sales prices not advertised ones.

Thanks. I had researched that a couple years ago and found it to be an issue. I had sent the lift cover off to a tractor guy I thought he knew what he was doing and I guess he didn't fix that problem in there. I researched something about you can pull it out and flip it around, but I've never been able to find a new one. I will go to the Ford forum and see if anybody knows anything there thanks.
