First time growing onions in the garden. Most of the tops are drying back now, so pulled most of them and hung them on a fence in the sun to cure. But a few had huge, green tops, with thickened stems and the bulbs were smaller than most- were these starting a second "grow" like they would from a set in the spring?

I know that if you are a really brave soul you can grow onions from seed. Will tell you how in a bit. You must use seed sets and not some onions you bought in a store. Most all of those are through a first season and if you plant them they go for reproduction. You will get stems that are from three to four feet tall. Then you get a huge funky looking flower. Then they go to seed and you can harvest them when dry. Look like black buckwheet. They will grow. After they flower the bulb is destroyed. Those stems as they grow make great salad garnish!
