Last spring i bought a 1942 Farmall H, this would've been a war time tractor and i'm sure maybe came out on steel wheels. Yesterday evening for the first time i got it running, this morning started it up again, and although it has one ruined rear tire on it. I first put it in reverse, then 1st, 2nd, 3rd, but its like there is not even a slot for 4th or 5th gear, could this be because it was a war time tractor and came out on steel???

War time tractor should have had a longer bolt to prevent the 4-5 shift fork from moving into 5th gear, but still allow 4th gear. Hard to tell what all has been done in the 75-76 years since it was built.

If you pull the belt pulley gearbox off, or the flat plate that replaces the gearbox you can see the 4-5 shift fork and see what's going on.

Just because its a 42 doesent mean it came on steel it could have been built in the early part. Does it have a steel shift knob. What are the cast codes as steel wheels came later unless it was ordered on steel

The serial number is FBH 70880 X5 casting numbers on the top of the transmission under the fill plug is 8536-D5 and to the right of the fill plug is 5 15 K
