Northern Mi bike trails

You guys who live "up north",what's a good scenic, easy to ride bike trail up there? Haven't had much of a vacation this year. We're thinking about taking a long weekend when the color changes and take the bikes up there to ride a day or two somewhere. I've done some searches, looks like most are crushed limestone instead of asphalt. We want something with some color and scenic views, don't just want to ride through the pines.

Glad to read someone else "rides"...
States usually have pretty good maps for bike/ped paths..
Find them on google...and they will rate them for you...
mountain bikers vs family outing trails..
Have fun..

Randy,
I would think that you would enjoy the new paved bike trail from Charlevoix to Petoskey along the shore of Lake Michigan. It continues on around Little Travers Bay to Harbor Springs if you want more. All beautiful scenic trails. Also a beautiful drive up M119 north of Harbor Springs. It's called the tunnel of trees. Call me if you should need anything. 810-964-4850 Tom

Good to hear your riding! We try to ride our bicycles around the lake once a week, it's 16 miles, and downtown Bemidji is about half way, so we can stop for lunch. It's about half designated bike trails and half city streets/highway, but all paved and pretty safe.

We ride at least 8 miles every Sunday. Two and three weeks ago we rode 19 each week. There's a paved rails to trails trail a few miles from the house. We take them to the trail in the pickup though. I don't trust drivers on the road to even ride on the road that far.

Ya,that's what I'm looking for up there. Just trying to find the most scenic of them. We ride the Heartland Trail here every Sunday.

Traverse City to Suttons Bay is a paved former RR grade. Approximately 15 miles one way, and they offer a Shuttle Bus with bike racks for those that don't want to ride round trip. Goes through some forested areas, some orchard areas, and some open areas. We have only ridden or walked a few miles from TC north, haven't made the entire route.

That sounds like a good possibility. There's one that runs from Gaylord to Indian River and on up to Mackinaw City, but it isn't paved. There's a short one from Grayling to Hartwick Pines, but it's parallel to the road and doesn't seem like it's really in harmony with nature,so to speak.

That one follows along the road and curves around in and out of the woods
. They even built a special bridge over I 75 so the bikes are off the main road. I was going to suggest the one in TC as it looks like what you may be looking for. They are always showing spots from this trail on TV here

Last time we were on Mackinaw Island we rented bikes and rode all the way around, kids were about the perfect age, I was already too fat, but we got it done. It may be too much tourist, but the natural beauty shines through the haze.

RR if you're going to go north the 7th is the bridge ride if you would like to make that a part of your trip. Trails from St.Ignace also. I have met a few of them. One guy rode from ND or MT to there one year. Not sure if he used trails or roads for trip. I am going to guess maybe some of both.
