Farmall H runs... Well... Wierd

I restored this tractor about 15 years ago and had a complete overhaul, ever since then it hasn't ran right, it's like it faintly flutters while running, very hard to describe, I have put in electronic ignition, didn't help, have messed with the carb on and off for several years. I finally got mad and got a core carb and installed a comprehensive kit, I installed that yesterday, it maybe runs 30% better. I noticed when I bought the new manifold (when I overhauled the engine) that it must be a universal fit (H, super H 300'350) the carb mounting holes are slotted to accept with size carb. I have not seen another manifold like this since then, could a bigger manifold cause it not to draw properly?

I suspect an air/vacuum leak. When it is running, spray some carb cleaner or other stuff, around the manifold to block and carb to manifold. HTH

Another thing I have seen used is your little propane tourch. Open the valve but don't lite it. With the tractor running wave the tourch jet all around the manifold. If memory serves the extra fuel "the propane vapor" will cause the engine to run rich. You should get a pretty definet response.

Were the valves replaced during the overhaul? I bought a H that was overhauled and the owner said he could never get it to idle smoothly. It turned out to be that someone had installed valves for high altitude operation (longer stems) and the correct adjustment was not possible.

I bought an H on an auction once that would never quite run as smooth as you expected.

Turned out the distributor drive gear was one cog off.

Honestly, I don't remember if the valves were replaced or not. I'm pretty sure they were, I'll check that out again.

I would try a different manifold. I have found many of the after market ones with poor air flow through them. Meaning the inside is rough casting and the air just does not flow correctly/even to all cylinders or at different speeds.

I would suspect manifold first, but test that by spraying propane around the edges.

My H had a little flutter, surprised me, but was condenser.

They will develop a little lope at idle if timing is advanced too far, I time mine by ear, run WOT, move distributor so it gets max RPM, then idle back and retard a little if it is loping.
