Pit bulls in my area in the news

Small town NH made national news tonight. Seems local pit bull owner was not getting satisfaction having her pit bulls attack her neighbors dog so she ran over man and his wife and their dog with her car. The wife survived Pit bull owner is in jail. Among the charges are three counts of violating a restraining order.

There was a story on the local paper's website here yesterday about an 85 year old woman's dogs attacking people. She refuses to do anything about it and won't cooperate with law enforcement. Se says she's putting her place up for sale because this isn't a "dog friendly" community. The house just a few places north of me recently sold for the same reason. The people haven't lived there much over a year, but she thinks her pit bulls have some God given right to chase anybody or anything that goes by.

I owned a fuel/lp had business and have been attacked. Anyone owning 1 of those pieces of crap outta be
spending life in prison. There is an OLD WIVES TALE-- only bad pit bull owners have visious pit bulls. That
is pure balcony. Anyone bringing one of those in to this neighborhood better be ready for a fight.

I have an have owned over 100 pit bulls and NEVER had a mean one EVER. It is not the dog it is how there trained PERIOD. I'm 1000% sure if you where to come to my house my pit bull would be the least likely one of my 3 dog to worry about and the other 2 well the only worry would be they like to jump up on people.

I believe that I agree with old about the dogs temperament, I had a couple. I have had a lot of Chihuahuas that were much meaner, but a little dog cannot kill you. A pit bull can. I don't want them around my grandchildren, or my cattle, unless I know them I just don't want them around.

Yea those dang pit bulls are dangerous.
Here is the half pit bull half Catahoula I use to own.

I do not care who you are.
You make one false move around my grandkids; He would eat you alive.

If there is a major problem with a dog owned by an idiot there are
just too many laws where people can get away almost with murder. Been
there several times with neighbors. Always s.s.s if you can getaway
with it.

Breeds were designed for a purpose. I was deeply into bird dogs (have owned dozens) and they had great natural bird
instincts and natural hunting ability.
The herding dogs have amazing instincts in their genes and they respond so well to training. Have you ever seen a super
Lab break ice to retrieve a downed duck 200 yards away? Or a lap dog provide constant physical support and friendship
to a love starved senior citizen? Breeds all had a purpose.

So tell me OLD, what is it that today's society needs that is fulfilled by the pit bull?

Form follows function: one cannot have a dog whose entire body and brain are adapted to executing the killing bite, without having a dog who will execute the killing bite.

Cured the problem of a neighbors bull dog that tried to attack me and a couple of other people one day, filed a complaint with the local law enforcement. That did no good, one 9 mm shell cured the problem when dog was on my property one time coming after me again.

Exactly, around "their" family they are good for the most part. But if you are not theirs they shouldn't be trusted.

I agree with you I've owned a lot of different breeds of dogs and each has its bred in instincts that are there and may come out at an unexpected time, all the training in the world can't stop that instinct.Just the legal liability of owning an animal with a reputation like a Pit Bull would be enough for me not to have one.As you say what's the point of having one?

I have had two. Both were really nice dogs until they were five or six years old and then they were very unpredictable. Both died of lead poisoning. Not having a dog I can?t trust.

We had a game warden years ago, that would put a mean dog down in front of the family that owned it if necessary. Knowing what it's like to have a canine tear ones flesh, more than once... there will be no hesitation in doing what needs to be done is my rationale. Just think what it feels like to have one sink a tooth into your upper lip and tear right through it, or clamp onto the inside of your leg and try to take a big chunk out.

I really and thoroughly enjoyed the satisfaction of being witness to this game warden doing putting down a neighbors dog who tried to attack me daily while going out on a run for training. He went after a young mother with an infant in a stroller once, that was the big mistake, the final mistake is when he went after the game warden. He drew on him and shut him up for good. He killed all the pups and the other mangy mutt and left them one pup. He clearly told them, if he turns out like the others I will be back.

That rotten shepherd was after me daily, I had to carry a big knife to stick him if he got to me and sooner or later he was going to. Every day, anyone passing by had to be terrorized by this dog. Payback was real ugly, but you as the owner deserve that at minimum for harboring a mean, rotten, worthless, vicious ANIMAL.

I can say in my county if a dog attacks a person Animal Control and the County Police will be on the scene in short order the dog will be taken and owner will be in a lot of trouble.

(quoted from post at 22:51:15 08/30/18) Payback was real ugly, but you as the owner deserve that at minimum for harboring a mean, rotten, worthless, vicious ANIMAL.

According to some, they would have used the word "creating"
instead of "harboring".

When I was doing insurance inspections, I had people actually brag about how awful mean their dog was. They'd have to physically restrain a dog while I was doing my job.

They didn't realize that they were actually standing there talking themselves out of homeowner's insurance. Any time I encountered any dog, the first question I was required to ask was does the dog have a bite history? Crazy as it sounds, people would actually tell me how their dog had chewed up the mailman, or whatever, and think it was funny.

Or, you'd do an interior inspection on a house, and almost throw up from the smell of dog poop. Again, people wouldn't realize that they had effectively reduced the resale value of a $300,000 house to zero.

After doing those inspections for 10 years, I came to realize dog owners are not normal people.

That is like saying every Vietnam veteran was a baby killer or every Bull will kill you. Pit bulls do not go bad and are not bad. Don't believe me come meet Vi. She is a 85lbs pit bull I have had since she was 3 weeks old. Only thing she will hurt and that is if I let her is a raccoon or opossum. In the 38 years I have lived where I live I have NEVER had a pit bull bite any body EVER. Sad people stereo type so many things with out knowing them.
Same holds true. If one thinks gun kill people then your blind to the truth

NEVER yet to have a pit bull cause a problem with any animal or person. Yes years ago I had a coon hunter problem. My driveway is a mile long and I had a pit bull that stayed out side most of the time. But she also stay on my land. The coon hunter let there dogs run and well if they came on my land they either left running or died simple as that. I told the hunters I did not want there dogs on my place and keep them off or well they where fair game. I lost farm animals to those coon dogs more then once. Shoot my youngest daughter would ride my first pit bull like she was a horse. Now if some one had tried to hurt my daughter well I have no idea what the dog would have done but it never happened so no problem there

Pit bulls make good family dogs. Very gentle dogs and faithful dogs. I've had over 100 of them and even a few Y-T people have been to my place and had my mean pit bull walk up to them YA MEAN only if you got hit by her tail wagging when they petted her.

So if you believe every pit bull is bad then do you believe every Vietnam veteran was a baby killer. Or that every bull is mean and will kill you. Or every gun kills people. Sorry but guns do not kill people, people kill people. Vietnam vets did what they had to do and well bulls killing there just an animal and any animal can be dangerous.

Shoot I have been in more fear of my life because of a German shepherd then a pit and I have the scares to prove it

So then if that is true then a German Sheppard or a Doberman or many other breed of dog should also not be allowed. Just like with any animal be it dog cat snake cow horse etc. they all can kill. I have never had or been near a pit bull that I feared but I sure have been in fear of my life with German Sheppard's and Dobermans. Or like a neighbor up the road his bull killed him. ALL dogs an animal made to kill but the pit ha gotten a bad rap because of how people handle them. No different then a gun the AR-15 gets a bad rap because of how people use them not because the gun is bad

Neighbor raised a PB from a pup. Real friendly playful dog over the visits for about the first year. Afterwards, even though I was a regular, he would have to be restrained, even tore the fender extensions off a pickup. Finally the POS attacked the man's wife and he put him down. Bred into them, I'm afraid.

Folks often do not realize what a danger just having the dogs is and how that may affect their opportunities for reasonable insurance. I have 2 Chihuahuas and a spaniel, sissy dogs, but I just have learned not to chance a seriously dangerous dog.

Actually, they all can be dangerous, and if homeowners insurance has any hint your dog is dangerous you can be denied coverage. Several breeds are taken into consideration.

Before the pit bull scare I raised and bred pit bulls. NEVER sold one to any one who was going to fight them or be anything but a family dog. The key to owning a pit bull is to raise them to be gentle and friendly NEVER train them to be an attack or guard dog. The guard dog in born into them so you train them to be gentle. As with most any breed of dog if the need is there to protect the dog know when to do it if taught right. That hold true with EVERY breed of dog

I went in for a hair cut. A girl of about 16 was getting some work done on her hands. She had a bandage on her nose. She had been bitten my someone's dog. SHE WAS THE SIXTH PERSON THAT THE DOG HAD BITTEN. I wanted to volunteer to bury that dog. How can someone be that negligent, as to allow their dog to continue to bite people.

For what its worth I was once denied insurance because of the wifes 15 lbs soaking wet Min-Pin. Didn't care about my lab cross that wieghed 120 lbs and had a deep distrust of law enforcement. For what its worth its the same company that told me power tools chainsaws etc. required a "commercial policy." Its the company that advertises all over how they are so much cheaper than every body else then doubles your premium every time it renews.

Same can hold true with many animals. Even a goose can be one that can cause big problems. Yes there not big but if one grabs you between the legs I am sure you would not like it. At one time I had a goose we called hook-a-nator and he would guard his area and at the time we had a guy who hauled gravel out of my place that would tease that goose. Well one day the goose got the better of him and got him between the legs. He was about to attack the goose for what it did and I told him do in and I'll have a cop here fast. Many times when an animal attack it is as much the person fault as it is the animals.

Either way I have owned sold and raised pit bulls and never yet had a mean one and I invite ANY BODY to meet Vi. Only thing Vi has ever hurt was raccoons and opossums

From reading the article it sounds to me
like she hit them on purpose and she should
have been charged with first degree
murder, not second degree. With second degree
she'll probably get 5 years and be out in 2
and a half.

Well first off I too am a Vietnam era veteran.
As to comparing it no I am not doing that what I am doing it using examples which are 2 different things.

All I am saying is you cannot put any thing into a one size fits all box. And the fact that when i got out of the Navy while I did not go to Vietnam I could not tell people when I got out that I had ben in the military or it would get me spit at or cussed at and some would not even hire a Veteran of that time. MY older brother was also in the Navy during Vietnam and was murdered in Ok for helping a woman. It is not the thing or animal it is how it is used or taught or raised. Just like if you raise a child badly it will go bad for them and or you and even then one never knows what twill make something snap. Known more then one Vietnam veteran who if they heard a gun go off or other such thing do some odd things.

I am also a Vietnam vet. I am also tired of being compared to a dog. I also don't believe old was doing that. I also remember coming
home from nam. Being told to keep my mouth shut you are sneaking back into your country.

I know and love dogs. Am almost never
afraid of one. I talk to them, let them get
to know me on their terms.
I even identify with them. Thus my name
here.
97% of the time I can become their friend
in short order - even dogs that are
considered vicious by most people.
The 3%?
Those are pitbulls. The breed needs to be
eraducated. Totally and completely
eradicated.
It could be done.
Pass ordinances that require a half million
dollar -or more- insurance policy to own
one. If the cops see a pitbull they can
require the owner to show proof of the
policy. On the spot! No policy? The pitbull
goes to the pound for 48 hours so the owner
has time to show proof of PRIOR insurance.
After 48 hours the dog is put down. Owner
gets arrested.
No ifs, ands or buts!
That would put the balk on jerks who think
they are cool.
I know a woman who was nearly killed by a
pair of pitbulls. She walked out of her
house on a summer day to water her flowers.
They attacked her in her yard and tore her
up badly.
She has permanent scars on her face, neck,
arms and legs.
She was saved by a neighbor who beat them
off of her with a shovel. She had huge
medical bills. The owners of the dogs was
never found. The authorities killed the
dogs. She was asked to testify at the state
capital. Had to relive the terror.
The state never did anything about the
breed. Shame on them!
This woman is scarred for life both
mentally and physically because some
dirtbag thought the breed was cool.
Eradicate the breed by making it too
expensive to own one.
They do not belong in this society.

PS,
I think Old could have used a better
example but don't think he meant to put
down Vietnam vets. Don't let the modern
snowflake mentality cloud your thinking.

(quoted from post at 22:03:39 08/30/18) I owned a fuel/lp had business and have been attacked. Anyone owning 1 of those pieces of crap outta be

Quoted post is pure baloney.

Although another word combination would be a better description.

Sounds to me like the woman had a mental health issue.
Mental health seems to be the underlying reason most people
kill. A car can be just as dangerous as a gun.

Friend with horses, retired deputy, school resource officer,
tells many stories where a student with a mental health issue
attacks him. Kid ends up in handcuffs. Parents are outraged at
him, how dare you touch my kid.

Wake up AMERICA, some people are JUST NUTS. Some NUTS have to
have emotional support animals. Emotional support animals can
be anything the Nut wants, including Pit Bulls. Wake UP!

All these posts and only 3 even noticed the
owner was NUTS!

Never had dogs but my kids did. Oldest
daughter loves dogs and from the time she
was old enough to walk she never met a dog
she considered a stranger. Used to scare us
to death when she walked up and played with
strange dogs. At 13 she heard about an old
man giving away Pitt bull pups and talked
the wife in to taking her over. While the
man was talking to my wife and telling her
to pick one and he would get it because the
Mama was so mean no one else could be
around her they turned & there was our girl
inside playing with a pup and the mama. She
raised that pup with love and the only way
it would hurt anyone was by hitting you
with his tail. Pretty much the same when
she got a rotweiler except she would lick
you to death.

Old don't care what you say the numbers don't lie.

"Altogether, “bully” breeds and bully look-alikes may together be as much as 13% of the total U.S. dog population. But the pit bull, Rottweiler, and mastiff/pit bull mixed dogs accounting cumulatively for about 90% of the fatal and disfiguring attacks on humans continue to make up under 9% of the dog population."

Why is it that basically 3 breeds and mixes make up only 9% of the total population but account for 90% of the problem?

Rick

Statistics say you are right, but when they do we owe to bite her she will be SEVERELY injured or dead. Statistics say they don't bite more often then other dogs. The difference is in the severity when it happens. She's playing the lottery, I hope she wins.

Sorry Old, I appreciate all veterans and what they do, but being a Viet Nam veteran is NOT the same as being a Viet Nam era veteran . No we are not any better, but it is a whole different ball game. And thank you for your service.

Your contradicting yourself from 3 days ago you say for $1000 then not NEVER

I cannot agree or disagree with what your saying. I have had a pit bull ever since I moved here in 1980. Yes not the same pit bull but I have always had one. The pit bull I have now I would let out of the house before I would the other 2 dogs I have because the other 2 are younger and tend to be hyperactive. The pit bull on the other hand would walk up to a person and wag her tail and if you get hit by that tail it hurts big time. I learned to have a good pit bull you treated them good and you never trained them to be a guard dog or attack dog. Back In the 80s I raised and sold pits and told any one who got one of my dog they where not for sale if they where going to fight them or use them as guard dogs or the price went up 1000% as in if I was selling it for $100 if they wanted it for fighting it went up to $1000 and no papers, yes they where registered

(quoted from post at 06:43:31 08/31/18)
Why is it that basically 3 breeds and mixes make up only 9% of the total population but account for 90% of the problem?

A lot of it IS the owners. Many folks don't want those breeds. We had a Rott mix (looked pure bred) that I'm certain would've torn anyone's arm off had they been aggressive towards us. Otherwise, this poor thing was usually scared of her own shadow! *lol*

She was big and strong, and we kept her on a chain that "looked" like we were being cruel. But any time someone would pull into the driveway, she'd get a running start and put that chain to the test. Was funny how extremely mild-mannered that dog was.

Like Ultradog, I'm one who used to be able to walk right up to nearly any dog. Had a sibling that was into hard rock and drugs, and every dog regardless of breed from any of their friends, the dogs were aggressive and mostly unpredictable.....like the owners. Dogs pick up on the mannerisms of their owners. If the owner is scared all the time, maybe the dog will be overly protective. If the owner yells alot, the dog is likely to be aggressive in a bullying way.

I also knew of a purebred Doberman many years ago that was "literally" scared of its own shadow. The owners were good people, but definitely not perfect. So this would suggest that sometimes, there's simply no way to tell how a dog will turn out. But yes, breeds like Pit Bulls do tend to be overly aggressive a lot of the time. Without more information over a much larger percentage of these "problem breeds", I still have to believe that the root of the problem is usually with the owner or the dog's surroundings.

I believe that if you own one it must be secured to you property and not let loose. I got attacked in my garage by one that was either dumped or got loose. If I ever see one on my property it will be shot on sight! I don't give a darn ifs its someones pet it should not be on my land! As for comparing a gun to a dog that is the dumbest thing I ever heard. It takes a person to shoot a gun but the dog can turn on someone no matter how it was raised, it breed into them. They were breed to fight bull in pits!

(quoted from post at 23:54:53 08/30/18) So then if that is true then a German Sheppard or a Doberman or many other breed of dog should also not be allowed. [b:84530797a3]YES[/b:84530797a3] Just like with any animal be it dog cat snake cow horse etc. they all can kill.

"Just like with any animal be it dog cat snake cow horse etc. they all can kill."
Now you are just getting desperate to defend the breed.

"ALL dogs an animal made to kill"
If you truly believe [u:84530797a3]all[/u:84530797a3] dogs have been bred to kill, there is no convincing you of the obvious, that being PitBulls are no more dangerous than a Yorkie.

Good thing you do not live in some parts of Canada because your current Pit(s) would be your last Pits.

Question for you there, Old, Why is it that 90% of the bad dog owners choose pitbulls as their breed of choice? I almost never hear of a bad dog owner having a poodle that maims anyone. Or maybe it is the one sided press only reporting on dog attacks from pitbulls while the folks who leave this mortal coil as the result of a springer spaniel are buried away on page 92 of a three sheet weekly?

Another dog story for you guys.
Back in the 70s my younger sister dated a
fellow.
He was a real nice guy - easy going, mild
mannered. Was going to college on the GI
Bill. I wished she could have kept him but
he dumped her after a couple of years.
Anyway, he was a black belt kung fu of some
sort guy.
He never bragged about it or even mentioned
it. Ever. I never knew till my sister told
me.
Had been practicing the art all his life.
He wasn't a big guy. Maybe 5'8" 160 lbs.
So one day he's walking down the sidewalk.
Residential neighbor hood in St Paul.
Either a Rott or maybe Dobie attacked him.
Out of the blue.
He said his reflexes just took over and he
flipped the dog somehow then took it's head
in his hands and broke it's neck. Dog
didn't have a chance.
Flip, crack, dead!
He called the police and reported it.
They came right away as they were looking
for that dog because it had attacked a kid
only about an hour before.
It made the St Paul paper. Police gave him
some kind of a citizen's award for it.
He and I were born the same day of the same
year. It's how I learned what my draft
number was - two years after I got out of 4
years in the Navy. It was 22. I always
wondered what my # was...
He got drafted.
I wonder what ever happened to him.
Sister turned into a good wife and mother.
But her husband is a lesser man.
Well, thatt's sort of a dog story. Isn't
it?

Here's another, we had a border collie/Australian Sheppard dog. It never showed any signs of agression toward anyone, except for snakes and rabbits. But my daughter brought her new man over and that dog immediately got in front of him and wouldn't let him in the house. Never before or since had she done anything like it. Turned out he was hitting my daughter. How she do knew nobody knows, he had never seen or been near the dog before. That dog is gone 5 years now and one of the few pets I miss.

Heres another one, had a couple of black guys want to paint the barn or something well my border collie would not let them out of the truck!

Like Old have opened pit bulls since I was16 and am now 72. I have never had a bad one or had one that attracted anyone. Also I will inflict the same damage to anyone who hurts one of my dogs! Our society is full on idiots who swallow anything that they hear on the news. I worked for BellSouth for 31 years and have had hundreds of encounters with dogs and have only been bitten once and it was a small mutt.

I'm just wondering if since you won the lottery if you think
that changes the truth and the statistics, if the actual numbers
of recorded incidents will now change and no more mallings or
killings will happen from these breeds? Or do you and old think
the recorded incidents of mallings and killings are fabricated
and those people lied?

Pretty much all of us go to school and graduate from high school and have a good start at what we need to know in order to get through life. Most of us continue to learn all through our lives, mostly from reading or hearing on the news the results of other peoples research, studies, and experiences. For instance most of us were told by our parents not to touch various hot things because we would get burned. Many of us learned it from seeing others who would not heed the warnings try it themselves and get burned. There are a few though who will not take into account others experiences no matter how prevalent they may be, but must have their own experience instead, regardless of how painful that experience may be.
