I just read some writing in the Lancaster farm newspaper. The articles were all about Bio Char,,it said bio char is like a sponge,it hold nutrients ,therefore helps the soil tremendously. It said many other things in detail.Did Any one read these articles? I dont know anything but what I Read today,,I sure would like to hear more about it.It can be made from wood,,sugar cane,,and now they are making it from manure.

Awhile back there was interest in the subject at Iowa State University. If I recall correctly, a woman scientist pooh-poohed the subject, stating it proved impractical. There are quite of few amateur practioners and gadgets on the internet. Leo

The char (whether good bad or indifferent) process would remove substantial components that could be used in the nutrition of the growing crops. Jim

At U C-Davis, Cal. they are doing field experiments using biochar on corn crops. They have been doing this for about 3 yrs. Haven't found any published results from their field trials. Maybe some of the guys near Cali know something about these test plots.

Not sure what Bio Char is, Bio has to mean plant matter.

Some Animal-based Amendments

livestock manure (cow, pig, chicken, horse, rabbit, etc.)
worm compost
Make your own
Buy worm castings
dried and powdered egg shells
Some Plant-based Amendments

dried and powdered comfrey leaves (See: 7 Ways to Fertilize with Comfrey)
homemade compost (made from yard and kitchen waste)
leaf mold (shredded leaves aged for 3 or more years)
wood chips (composted for 3 or more years)
grass clippings

I use most of what is listed above. I'm a believer that wood chips are good after it ages. I get wood chips and dirt from neighbor who has a stump grinding business.

Many articles say grass clippings can decompose faster, weeks, when incorporated in dirt.

The longer everything ages, the better it gets.
