Hydraulic sickle bar mower

How much hydraulic capacity does it take to run a 6 foot sickle bar mower? I've found one in an auction and I'm wondering if a Case VAC would have enough capacity to run one. Mine has the engine mounted hydraulic pump.

Are you talking the cylinder to lift the bar or a hydraulic motor to drive the sickle instead of PTO?

If you are looking at a hydraulic driven mower, the ones I have been around are driven by front mounted pump. Here is a link to newer ones.

It sounds like he wants to run the sickle with hydraulics. I would also be curious how much volume and pressure it would take to do this as I am looking for something to cut weeds under the electric fence.

No one can answer your question with any degree of certainty unless you post more info as to the specifics of the mower you are considering such as GPM and pressure requirements.

That being said, it's highly unlikely the little camshaft breaker pump on your VAC would be up to the task.

I don't know the specifics for this mower.
I'm asking more generally what the volume
and pressure requirements are to run one.

The hydraulic sicklebar mower should have its own self contained hydraulic system if it is complete.

Unless the mower has a self-contained PTO driven hydraulic system, I'd keep looking for a PTO driven mower. A VAC is a nice mower tractor, but I doubt its 1940's or early 1950's hydraulic system has the pressure, the flow, the continuous duty rating, or the hydraulic oil cooling capacity to power the mower.

You need the info off the sickle mower hydraulic motor.

If its a mower meant for a minimal flow it is likely a tiny motor. If its mean to run on tractor that usually runs a hydraulic flail mower it likely has a large motor so its compatible with the high flow pto powered pump for a flail mower.

The auction is next week. I'll have to see if I can go see it beforehand and see if I can get more specifics about the mower.
