Johnson Grass

What herbicide is best for johnson grass? I have used round up and paraquot and it keeps coming back.

IF you have Johnson grass, you have a problem. JG spreads by rhizome and seed. We have found that repeated sprays of Roundup can cure the problem because it will kill the roots and rhizomes. But, timing is critical to kill the seedlings. And, to make matters worse, the seed can exist in the ground 15 years or more before germinating, so you may be at it for a few years to get rid of it.....

Kenny, I am in Fayette county, the johnson grass is on a fence row and in a pasture. What do you recommend?

Round up will kill Johnson grass (along with everything else).

Yes, you will almost certainly be required to retreat multiple times.

I have small areas that I have been retreating with a hand sprayer for nearly 10 years.

I haven't found much round up can't kill around my place. I thought paraquot is the same as agent orange, and not too good to use. I have a bottle of praquot my Dad had, and haven't use it for that reason. I heard you didn't even have to be around the spraying in Vietnam to have a chance of getting cancer. Just being in country gave you that chance. Who knows for sure. Stan

I believe Paraquat is Gromoxon, not the same thing as A Orange. Still dangerous if used inapropriatly, its a contact burn down product, very quick reaction and not systemic to the roots...so plant may grow back if it has a good root system and is a perrenial. Google the lable to see for sure.

If you aren't going to use it check and see if there are any unused pesticide collection sites, usually no change as the ecology people don't like stuff sitting around not stored correctly.

No.

Indeed, it's good fodder.

It is, however a perennial that is very difficult to control and easily spread. It is also one of the invasive plants that state law requires be controlled in IN, though rarely enforced.

Johnson grass is not normally poisonous but if it goes thru a rapid growth spurt after a rain it can develop hydrocyanic acid leading to what is called Prussic acid poisoning.

(quoted from post at 07:08:35 08/23/18) No idea what kills Johnson Grass.
Is Johnson grass poisonous to animals?

JG when stressed from drought or frost can have prussic acid( hydrocyanic acid)poisoning which can kill livestock. HCN
does not prevent oxygen from being transported by hemoglobin,
but does prevent the body cells from receiving oxygen. Thus, the animal dies from asphyxiation at the cellular
level. Animals affected by prussic acid poisoning exhibit a
characteristic bright red blood just prior to and during death.

Yep cattle and goats will graze it into the ground and makes pretty decent hay if cut before it gets real mature. Will grow in a dry year a long with Switch grass and Blue Stem when nothing else will grow.

I used Pastora to get rid of mine. I think they took off the market or at least around here. Seems like it took two years to get it, I don't have any now.

Use round up on a weed wiper, the Johnson grass is taller than the base. kills the Johnson grass but does not kill the Good grass.

Roundup will kill it down but it takes several treatments to finally kill it.
Cattle love it and will chew it to the ground stunning it's growth but it'll come back.
Wicking it when it's taller than other grasses seams to work the best but also takes to most time to treat.

Neighbor used 'Outrider' by Monsanto, on Johnsongrass in fescue. It seems to have worked fairly well. It is expensive, but only takes a small amount per acre.

I first saw JG in the early fifties and it took over many farms and I once had a real problem with it but so many other weeds were hardier and crowded it out and now the replacement weeds and grass are the problem. I have had cows, hogs, goats and horses on JG fields and never had one die. Wild cherry leaves will do the same thing but I never had a problem as I always had plenty of pasture and hay that they had rather have. This was in Western TN.
