Coolant leak/ water pump ??? Massey 1080

Tractor is a Massey 1080. But it is more of a generalized question.

Noticed today that we were getting some coolant sprayed in a circle inside the engine compartment of our Massey
1080. It is in a line about an inch behind the fan blades. I can?t figurenout where the leak is coming from. I don?t
see any obvious holes in the hoses. Though they are all pretty old. No apparent damage to the radiator. There are
no obvious leaks when the tractor is not running. Just evidence from the coolant spraying off the fan blades.

One thing I noticed while running was that the fan pulley seemed to have a little wobble to it. When the tractor was
stopped the fan and pulley had a fair amount of play. Is the pulley mount on the water pump a possible source of
the leak or is that not a component of the water pump that contains coolant?

Thoughts?

I am reading now about the leak out of a weep hole being a sign of failure. It would make sense based on what I am seeing...I think.

If water pump failure is imminent - am I better off buying a rebuild kit or a new water pump?

MF dealer I worked for would repair the original pump. Think it's better cost wise now to replace the complete assembly. If I recall the fan pulley bolts on that engine, so the replacement pump may need the pulley swapped over.

I've replaced the entire pump on my 1085. You need to press the pulley off the old one and on the new one. A shop press is what we used.
I've also put kits in but it's more work and not too much different in cost if I recall.

Yes weep hole is the sign of failure. Wobble not good either... next thing you know it will be overheating. Change it now is best.

Awesome info guys.

I will be ordering myself a new pump-

Should I get a new pulley too? Or keep the old?

Should I go through local, somewhat unreliable AGCO dealer? Suggestions for online resource?

STOP running the tractor NOW!!! the other posters have pointed out what is failing. What they did not mention is the fact If the bearing totally fails the fan blades can hit the radiator. This usually ruin the radiator. So you run the risk of a much more costly repair later if you keep running it at all.

Do I replace pulley too?
They are sold separately..not sure if the pulley would definitely need replacing. Don't want to wait for 2 rounds of shipping...

I ran my JD 2010 for about an entire year with a failing water pump bearing, mostly because the leaking fluid evaporated. I knew the radiator was always low but did not see the leak. As JD seller says, when it goes it goes badly. Mine went out one evening with the blades hitting the radiator, yes. Luckily no serious damage since I shut it down fast.

Unbolt the fan blades from the pulley before dismounting pump. When the pump is off you need to press the pulley off, maybe take to a shop if you don't have a press. Get them to press the old pully onto the new pump.

Make sure when you order the new pump you get the same diameter shaft as the old one so you can reuse the pulley. Rebolt the fan blades last after you put the belts on.

You may want to replace the thermostat and the belts at this time also. As JD says, don't wait for it to take out your rad too.

Good Luck, Grant

Happened to mine about 6 years ago . Still running the same water pump . In need a of a fan shroud and fan . Going to run the radiator as long as possible to get every dime back from this mess I can. fan grabbed the fan shroud which bent the fan and destroyed the shroud and made a giant hole in the radiator which I patched with jb weld
