Repair wood cookstove

Picked up stove wife?s been wanting but it has pieces broken on back. Can it be welded, or better to replace the metal? Does it need to be cast?

That appears to be a coal stove. I rebuilt my Belgian built Surdiac a few years ago. Parts were readily available at a supply store here in NH. The thing about coal stoves is that they need to have the various parts kept tight together with good gaskets between or they get too much air and burn too hot and larger parts will get distorted. If you plan to burn wood you can get by without it being so tight, and if she really loves it you could fabricate parts from steel but I would use at least 1/4 thick.

Cast can be brazed if you know what you're doing. I have a wood cook stove that needs a similar repair. I've lost the piece that got knocked loose and I'm going to have to fit a piece of steel in it's place. The whole things will need to be pre-heated, I'm sure, and will probably need some sealant (fire clay type) to fill the tiny gaps. Find a decent welding shop that knows brazing and it can be done.

I have had very good results using a non nickle welding rod. I don't know the name, but my welding supplier keeps them in stock.
I grind a vee and weld a little at a time. Have used it on thick and thin cast. Does great.
If I can remember, I will call the shop tomorrow.
Might ought to email me to remind me or post on here again tomorrow.

That should be fairly easy to repair.

From what I see that was probably broken by some unfortunate event. That type repair will hold up. It's trying to fix broken cast that failed under normal use that is difficult.
