Adaptor to put an output shaft on flywheel side

Does anyone know if there exists an adaptor to add an output shaft on the flywheel side of an aircooled engine?

Can't tell from Pic.
Did kohler make a special crankshaft or an adaptor?

Thank you very much. I didn't know they called a stub shaft.

That could save me a pant load if I need a new engine for my Terramite.

I already have a 20 hp honda on a Terramite. I used a mirror it look at stub shaft. Shaft appears to be connected to flywheel.

Look at the Honda motor. The adaptors usually bolt on the flywheel. There is usually a flange that mates the adaptor so the bolts do not carry the centering load.

JD,
I did use a mirror to look at the stub shaft on my 20 hp honda on my terramite. It does appear to be attached to the flywheel using the 3 holes used to pull flywheel. That's where I got the idea honda didn't make a special crank.

Not sure if Kohler made a special crank for the CH640-3120. That's the motor Terramite uses and have used for many years. So far the cheapest I found is $1700. Or did Kohler just add a stub shaft to a CH620-3100, for $1260. A stub shaft on eBay is $50.

I may be overlooking, the description of the motors appear to be identical.

I suspected the crank was doubled shafted. Only know for certain when I need to remove engine.

Very glad to learn that stub shaft exists.

I have an old Koler engine out in my shop that was pulled due to a knock in the engine and if I remember right it has a drive part on the flywheel end but I would have to look to be sure. Been in my shop for a few years and I have not looked at it for a few years.

the older Cub Cadets took motive power from the flywheel side, Toro made some Greensmaster III with Kohler engines that ran the hydraulic pump off the flywheel side, what was really odd is the crankshaft was flush on the other side, no stub

It shows the replacement Terramite and Greensmaster are the same engine.

Terramite has hydraulic pump attached to flywheel side too. Other end of crank is exposed, chopped off. I accidently ran a stick into the seal to exposed crankshaft. Good thing I caught it with very little oil loss. Wasn't anything to replace.

Any idea why they want way more for that engine? Almost $500 more.

Do you think a stub would work on cheaper kohler engine?

Let me know what you have? A good block and heads is worth something if it's a 20 hp. Mine has at least one roller main bearing. That's the bearing on cut off shaft. I was it when I replaced the crank seal. Not sure if the flywheel side has a roller bearing.

Cheapest replacement motor is over $1700, + taxes and shipping.

Nothing wrong with my motor, doesn't use oil or make funny sounds. I think I'm on borrowed time with 1950 hours.

I've seen a lot of Kohlers, and others, with stub shafts. Never encountered a double ended crank though. You should be able to look up your spec number on the Kohler web site and find out for sure.

When I worked for Cat. We did some Listers for NASA remote stations. Needed short stub shafts all we had was long shafts. Two days after we finished cutting them down and sending the out. The short shafts showed up. Some very unhappy people around the shop.

Changing engines is more difficult than one would think.

Someone changed the kohler on my T5D to a 20 hp honda. The shaft height of the shaft is about an inch less. I had to use spacers to elevate engine. Drill new motor bolt holes. The stub shaft they used is too short. It's impossible for me to grease the coupling yoke. Some cut out part of the frame for the exhaust.

I'll bite the bullet and buy another kohler before I use another honda or a honda clone.

I don't see why I couldn't use a kohler, add a stub shaft and save over $500.

There are new stub shafts on eBay that were removed from new Kohlers.

That's an adapter. It mounts to the flywheel with 4 bolts. Lots of Toro 500 series use that engine, I've also seen it on a Massey Ferguson made by Simplicity. I'm pretty sure Kohler has a kit with just the shaft and bolts and new flywheel screen.

This one has a starter generator one it also. I'll try and remember to look at it tomorrow. Not sure what size it is but do know it is pretty big at least size wise

I went to eBay and searched for kohler stub shaft. Kohler sells them. Link to a new stub shaft taken off kohler engine. Kohler wants $300 for a new one.

I know there is a stub shaft on my 20 hp honda that powers a hydraulic pump on my terramite. It attaches to flywheel using the 3 holes you would use to pull flywheel.
Kohler uses 4 bolts to attach stub to flywheel.

I use eBay a lot to search for things. I learned on YT what it's called, stub shaft.
kohler stub shaft.

Old,
I had an old cub cadet with a 10 hp kohler. It had a starter generator.

I'm looking for a 20 hp, two cylinder. The flywheel has starter teeth.

I don't think you have a 20 hp kohler command engine. Thanks just the same.

I went out and looked at that engine and on the flywheel end is belt pulley and it is set up so that one can add a drive of some sort. On the other end is a keyed shaft and some sort of odd drive hook up also. Sort of looks like a CV joint sort of hook up
