a dumb mistake on battery

I dont know how I did it but I got one of my 12 volt batteries charged backwards .I have two 12 volts hooked up parallel . Should I leave it like that and just switch the cables on that one or discharge it some how and recharge it correctly .I think I make more screw ups at 68 years old than as teenager !

I would discharge it and recharge it correctly. I just take a head light bulb and hook it up. That usually will drain them over night. Then I trickle charge them back up. The slower the better it seems.

I can't understand why sparks weren't flying when you connected two batteries
in parallel and one was reversed polarity. Newer smart chargers wouldn't
work. Older manual chargers send sparks flying.

I have seen two 12v in series on trolling motors and electric wheelchairs
reverse polarity.
Reversing polarity occurs one battery is weaker than the other. Continued use
causes the polarity of weaker battery to reverse polarity. When you recharge
the 2 batteries in series, the weaker battery will end up with correct
polarity. So it may be possible to charge with the correct polarity. Test
battery afterwards. Post back

That's why it's a good idea to replace all batteries at once.

Your battery is always worth $10 at O'Reilly's. They will $10 in store credit.

Her is what I have done with success. Discharge battery till stone dead.I mean dead dead.
Hook to another battery with charge + to + and - to minus for a few minutes. This I think sets the polarity.
Remove battery with charge and hook my 50 year old 5 amp charger to near dead battery. Let it charge till fully charged.

Discharge it and recharge it with the correct polarity. If you don't, somewhere down the line somebody (maybe you) will hook it up to something assuming the "+" and "-" markings on the battery are correct.

Agree with the others. Leave it hooked up but unhook the correct one.
Did you double check everything with a meter? The one that is reverse
just turn on the lites and make it is STONE STONE dead. THEN... hook
everything back together and let the potential of the good battery
slowly reset the polarity of the messed up battery. Monitor this for
awhile to make sure the goofed up battery doesn't go into thermal
overload. Hope everything comes out well. Did it once like 40 years
ago. Letting another battery re- establish the polarity you don't mess
with battery chargers or anything like that. Watch your water level in
the goofed battery if you can. Be very careful because of hydrogen
gas. When batteries are brandnew they need to have a potential charge
put on them at the manufacturers.

Thanks to all of you ,what a great help. I discharged the battery with a starter I had from a old gravel truck.I have it on the charger at lowest setting 2 amps .My wife left the key on (8 days ) then I split the tractor to do the clutch so the batteries were dead and I did them separately . I will report on the battery Monday.
