With the weather being so hot here in S Calif. The fire dept recommends no mowing past 10:00. With so many fires in the state now they don't need another one.I could probably keep going, but If I started a fire it would be not so good for me. I am about done for the season anyway. Three more little mowing jobs is just about it. In the past 20 years I have started three small fires from rock strikes, all were put out before anything got out of control. I know It can happen. Any one else start a fire mowing, disking, or harvesting? Stan

I had a customer that almost got burned down when a haybine started his field on fire. I think it would be pretty hard to start one with a brush hog style mower. I think a lot of guys use it as an excuse to not mow when it is hot out. If you are hitting that many rocks and you can't look back and check when you hit something you shouldn't be doing that kind of work. Haybines, combines and balers are the main fire starters around here..or maybe an ember from a tractor exhaust. I just read the big fire in CA was started by a car with a flat tire!

Eldon,l will have to disagree with you. Rotary mowers do start fires, by striking rocks. When it's over 100 degrees the grass is about as dry as it can be. As I said, I have started three fires, with my mower. I would rather not chance another fire and do what the fire dept recommends, when it's hot, and not mow. I don't have that much work anyway. About every year someone starts a fire with a hand held mower with a metal blade, or a rotary tractor mower. Stan

About 15 years ago I cut some hay on a field I haven't cut over before, it was hot and dry.
I layed it off late one afternoon making about 3 rounds before dark, the next day as I mowed around the field and heard my drum mower make a couple of light rock strikes but didn't give it much thought.
When I turned at the end of the field I could see smoke about half way across the field.
Sparks from a rock strike had set the hay I'd cut the evening before on fire, luckily we were able to put it out before it got to big.

First time I'd ever set a field of hay on fire with a mower.
