Leroy (others?)

Leroy, again today I used my all-time favorite tractor. It is my Farmall H.
A couple of days ago I used it for side-delivery raking of hay. It is a smooth running, gas-sipping tractor for raking.
Today I used it to rake scatterings with a McCormick Deering dump rake. I think you can probably relate to the "art" of using a dump rake to make a windrow. Wow, it is quite something to make a windrow with a dump rake!
I think I got pretty good at it by the end. It was a feeling of accomplishment that just doesn't come with a side-delivery rake.
Were the scatterings worth the gas used? Absolutely not! But the feeling of getting the hang of using the old dump rake was a hoot. Hope this brings a good memory or two to you. kelly

A friend of mine who ranches in the Nebraska Sandhills has six H's, each dedicated to a particular job. He swears they're still the best haying tractors ever.

Well I have never used a dump rake but I do know what it is all about to use an ancient hay rake to hay with.

A fuel miser this tractor is for sure for the technology level used.

We had the same New Holland rake new 50 years ago. Dad sold it several years ago for more than new price. We also pulled it with an H most of the time. He still has the H. He is 90.

A few years before I was old enough to work for him my neighbor had a daughter raking scatterings behind an N. A few years later as he added ground and milkers that practice fell by the wayside.

I also use an H to rake and bale, I use an M to cut with the 990 IH haybine, but I have had my H on it when the M was tied up. The H could run it but had its hands full! You are correct , the H is very easy on gas, even compared to the M which is good too. I am actually looking for a nice B to take over raking and running the elevator just because I like those little tractors. People will tell you that you need live PTO to bale, but we have been doing without here for well over 50 years.

Back in the fifties my father always raked the "scattern's" The dump rake had a shortend tounge to hook to the tractor a pulley hung under the seat and a rope between the Ford 8N, thru the pulley and tied into the dumping mechanism. The side delivery rake wasn't much so there was a lot o scattern's left on the field. If you pulled the rope just as the big rake wheel hit the windrow you could make a pretty straight windrow. Picked the hay up with a New Idea loader. Dad on the wagon and me on the tractor.
