OT, bird behavior

We always have robins nesting around the yard. This morning I was sitting on the deck in the shade and there were six robins on the ground at the edge of the woods. All of them were doing the same thing. Sitting motionless with wings spread and beak open, changing position, pecking at themselves. Some looked as if they were injured and had some loose feathers. Is this molting or some other behavior?

I remember in the movie 'The Birds" Alfred Hitchcock, that that was the first sign of them getting ready to strike an adversary. I haven't got a clue, perhaps they are just hot?

I have a bird bath with a solar powered fountain, birds around here get fresh water daily and baths! Lots of different breeds. We love to watch them have their Saturday night bath!! HeHe

"If a bird is overheating, it sits still, opens up its wings and puffs out its feathers. What this does is allow a cool breeze to hit its body and keep the warm feathers as far as possible." from a bird web site.
