What is this stuff?

Dad's Kubota 9200 loader wasn't working and making quite a ruckus from the hydraulic pump. Tractor had water in the hydraulic oil when we got it. I chandged it twice before I took it to Dad. I figured he'd put a few hours on it and change it again. Oil looks clear as can be on dipstick, so we figured he had just cooked the moisture out of it.

So this is what was on the intake screen and the oil that drained out of the sump was milky, unlike what we saw on the dipstick. This was definitely some slimy nasty stuff. Mineral spirits and brake clean didn't really do the trick. We tried simple green and that worked better than anything.

So my question is "what is this stuff?" I've never seen anything like it. As a matter of fact, there wasn't any on that screen the first time I changed the oil. Just curious...

Did the tractor set a long time??? Maybe under water??? That looks more like an biological material not oil based. Some type of algae??? Especially since mineral spirits and brake clean did not work and Simple green did.

It was non-running when we got it with engine issues. The plastic fill plug for the hydraulics has been replaced. Maybe it was lost or cracked and got water in that way. Really don't know. I'm sure it wasn't submerged. It came a few miles from me. No way the water got that deep around here.

Looks like the oil and water combo I drained out of my ford rear end ended up flushing the case with diesel a couple times to get it out and brake clean won?t kill it

Mineral spirits and water will glabber up just like in your pix... Don't believe me go mix a batch... Diesel would have been a better moisture eliminator.. Mineral spirits would have been OK as long as you made sure no moisture was left in the system... Once you agitate Mineral spirits and water it glabbers up into a milk shake....

I spec that's a fine screen water is hard to get by it I would just keep pulling it out and cleaning it till it got better..

Well here is what we do . Do not laugh have don it over the years more than once and it works. Go wherever they run a fleet of trucks, or at least get you enough burnt oil, the oil they drain from the engine. Clean and replace that strainer. Fill the unit and let it run for forty-five or so. Let it set till the next morning go in and drain the system again. Now as bad as your is may take a couple of time but USED engine oil will NOT absorb water like new oil will. What it will do is displace the moisture and it will drain off. I will not argue that you MAY have some sort of algae but really think you are just seeing the last of all that water. Please keep us informed.

Just a thot - soak it in a bucket (yogurt container) of baking soda and warm water - who knows, might work. HTH
