OT Pond Aeration

Anybody have any experience with water aeration. I have a small pond that is about 50 foot deep and I am looking for some way to aerate it to raise channel catfish. Any recommendations?

A "small" pond that is 50 feet deep? That is wayyyy deep. I have a one acher pond that is 9.5 feet deep max. How far from your shop? You can throw an air hose and a cement block in the middle and let it bubble an hour every day. Not full blast, just bubble. Air hoses don't cost that much and when done you will now have plenty of air hoses.

Solar powered can be an option. It may not be reasonable to pressure to 50 ft down. The stream of bubbles will circulate the water in a vertical column. Jim

What is your reasoning for needing aeration in the first place???

While a really deep pond is subjectable to water turn over bringing stagnate un-oxygenated water to the surface there is no way you will oxygenate a pond that deep.
If you are trying to stock the pond at commercial fish farm rates you may need aeriation in the summer but stocking at those rates is not advisable for a farm pond.

What is the surface area and volume of your pond? Your state's extension service may have recommendations for your area, or try some neighboring states.

Water pressure is approximately 1/2 PSI for every foot of depth. It takes more energy and money to pump air as pressure rises. You probably don't want to aerate from the deepest depth. Just deep enough to mix oxygen into the water. Fountains can be used for aeration in temperatures above freezing. Below freezing air pumps are used.

Fifty feet deep is pretty deep for a farm pond. I've been on a number of of mile diameter lakes that didn't exceed fifteen feet deep.

Google little river pond mill. Moves water, not air, and the water picks up oxygen when it circulates to the surface. Actually does a better job of aeration than pumping air down there. A friend used to sell them, and they were the best at aerating manure lagoons and ponds.

I have two ponds, one is an average 12' deep and has aeration, the other is an average of 90' deep 15-17 acres and does not have aeration other than the active digging.

In the smaller pond I installed a Blue Diamond 120 pump this year with three 10" micro disc bubbler heads (900-1,000' air lines). This setup really moves the water even though everyone told me it wouldn't work. I have a pond maintenance firm who visits bi-weekly for vegetation control and I think they can't believe my results.

Your problem will be building enough pressure to overcome the depth. Look into some piston pumps an give it a try.
