8N redlining at start up

Hello all,
Just joined up the forum to get some input on a strange problem.
I have owned a 52 8N for about 4 years now and it has run great. About a year and a half a go I rebuilt the governor and have had no issues (about 20hours of brush cutting). Yesterday I cranked the tractor up and it ran for about 1 minute then the engine revved up to max rpms. I shut it off and restarted it and immediately redlined again. I turned on the PTO and put it in gear and ran it for about a 100 feet to see if it would settle down, it did not. I then shut it down and waited about 10 min and stated it again. It cranked and with in a few seconds maxed out rpms I pushed on the linkage arms to the governor and could manually slow the engine down but when I turned it loose it would rev up again.

Im not sure whats going on but dont want to blow the thing up. Could it be a governor problem or something else?
Thanks,
John

If you unhook the linkage at the carb, and run the throttle buy hand, and it works, then it has to be in the governor. I will add, be sure to follow the linkage from the dash to the governor housing. It might be as simple as a weed holding it open.

They will rev to full throttle if left un-governed.
On the 8N, the linkages are held on with spring loaded ball
couplers. Make sure one of them didn't pop off.
Also make sure the rotating arm on the bottom of your throttle
rod is still attached and not rotating on the shaft.
It should have a bolt through it in a notch in the throttle rod.

On the forum index, down below the the tractor talk forum, you
will find a forum dedicated to the 9N/2N/8N tractors.
There are many guys there that deal strictly in the N series tractors
and you may get much more specific answers to your questions.

Welcome to the forums!

It's NOT impossible that something could have come apart or failed in the governor.

Also, it's not unheard of for the throttle plate screws to shake out or break, freeing the throttle plate from the control of the throttle shaft.

(quoted from post at 19:15:51 08/02/18) Thanks Guru. Ill give it a try this weekend and report back.
Yup. Must be the governor. I disconnected the carb linkage and could work speed with my hand. When I turned it loose it would wind back up. Ill rebuild and let you know what I find.

I had the drive gear spin on the gov shaft it was hard to control RPM off idle it would run away but I could pull it back to idle with the had throttle.. I knew the gear had been welded on the weld broke... The gov was junk and had to replace it with a different one..

They will get'er done un-governed... I tried to plow with it that way you can not control a un-governed engine are stay in the seat either...

Pulled the governor today but when I pulled it out of the housing everything seemed to be fine. All the balls and bearings were smooth and there wasnt any sign of anything broken. Will reassemble this weekend and see if there is any change. Any ideas on what it could have been? Could there be something broken in the tractor that would cause the governor to max out?

Got it figured out. When I had the governor re built the guy tack welded the spindle into the gear. I guess when he punched it out it was too loose to compression fit back. Anyway, the weld broke and allowed the gear to free spin when the engine was running. I re welded the spindle to the gear and it runs like a top.
Thanks for all the input.
