Is 7 old enough to drive?

My sister from Florida stopped by with her daughter and grandson.
Her grandson did a great job driving with his mom in the copilot seat.
All had smiles, grandma included.

I think it depends on kid and parents willing to teach. I was driving Farmall B and Dads 34 Ford 1 1/2 ton truck in field picking up hay. The Farmall B had wooden blocks on the pedals so I could reach them.

I agree it depends on the child. I was bush hogging on a Ford 8n at the age of 6. Had to stand up the whole time to drive. Only was allowed to mow on flat pasture for the first summer.

Hey John
I am and was a tall kid so I was hauling corn to the elevator at 7
We only lived 3 miles away but tractor driving just came natural
Depends on the kid as said above

Well George it depends, On the road NO; on the farm YES. I was visiting a friend and his kid comes out with a friend about the same age, both about that age, crawled, and I mean crawled, up in the tractor, started it up and disappeared up the road to afield where they proceeded to disc. Did a good job too. Drive that go-cart? shoot they start racing as soon as they can stand.

Jr. has been on a powered machine since 4. He had an oops with a golf cart and one of those shifty trees at 7. Bruised his ribs and taught him to pay attention. He had helped me out since he was a little kid with pull outs and loader picks. Make sure the setting is right and make sure they understand the function. I?ve marslhalled parade at Junkshow for 20+ years and kids don?t scare me as much as some adults.

Was driving the 350 with a great big fence repair cart when I was 7. Was driving my grandfather's IH pick up on the back road when I was eleven. Nobody said a thing. Was hooking all of the equipment up and chopping green chop the next spring. Sorghum and corn. Un hook everything and then go feed the cows on the concrete stage along the lane. Most kids and people today have trouble with a lawn tractor. Nothing like hitting the same rock everytime you mow the lawn.

We lived a mile and a half from the local grain elevator. I was hauling grain with a farm truck when I was 12.

If there were any LEO's about, they apparently chose to look the other way.

My daughter has been driving the JD 630 since she was 4. Got to pull it in a local tractor pull this spring. Now has a go kart. She's 7 now. Drove the tractor to help others pick up hay, made enough money to buy a trampoline. Now she has taken up knife sharpening to earn money.

that 4 wheely thing is too fast for a kid ,.however. around age 4 ,i was guiding a SC CASE down rows of hay bales. CASE literature often showed children and teenage girls operating the letter series tractors back in the good old common sense days. i ran a DC Case with a 14ft disc behind when i was in the 5th grade getting the ground ready to plant . the brakes pedals were easy for me to reach and the ol gent had a hand clutch that i would engage with my foot.

You nailed it! "back in the good old common sense days."
But some now, don't have the common sense & responsibility to hold a butter knife! That ain't BS, I'm living the experience, I'm sorry to say.

I cracked a sprocket on my dad's bulldozer when I was 8 and was told I knew better as I had benn running it before then.

Dad sat me on the tool box which was mounted to the fender on the 8N ford when I was 6. We drove out to the field beside our house with a two bottom plow on and he went across the field cutting in all the furls to get me started. He showed me how to operate everything including what to do when it tripped. It was a 26 acre field. When he got done he said don't come in till its done. Away I went. I can remember that it seemed to take forever and how proud I was when I was done. I had to stand up on the clutch to depress it. I had been operating the tractor before this but this was my first real job. Thank you dad for teaching me good work habits. I miss you. Dad passed in 2011. As for my kids, I had my daughter operating my commercial zero turn mower when she was 8 and she was a real pro at it but I don't think I would put her on a tractor doing what dad had done with me, I have seen too many accidents with bad results.
