John Deere question

I had a guy tell me this morning John Deere sales are down due to a spat over ownership of the computers in their new tractors. Any truth to that story? Not familiar with the modern stuff - never had a computer issue with my 43 M.LOL

Apparently JD is saying that buyers are only "licensees" who are allowed unlimited use of the machine, but since its still "owned" by JD, the farmer has to call JD for repairs and can't fix it himself. Some tech-savvy guys are "hacking" their own machines to they can diagnose and repair them. One guy pointed to his combine and said "It costs me a thousand bucks every time that thing is put on a trailer and taken in for repairs, plus I can't afford to be down for several days during harvest".

The Mega Dealer around here is feeling the squeeze of low crop prices,,and the high tech equipment is less dependable and computer issue is also a factor... I am getting more 40-50-60 series tractors in here for engine/air conditioner/transmission upgrades to keep them on the work force....

Cars are being hacked and reprogrammed every day. There are even replacement programmable ECUs available for lots of engines.

most vehicles or auto manufacturers have similar software or restrictions. I'm sure since there are thousands and millions more automobiles on the road, aftermarket companies have reverse engineered the software and came up with equipement to work around the restrictions.

There is obviously not going to be as much demand to hack John Deere software, people have already done it and it will become more popular. The problem with this stuff is, what happens when they go obsolete and lose dealer support. This tractor is totally useless now because some sensor/module is faulty and can't be replaced.
