School me on soybeans

There is a large field of soybeans
that we fenced in last week. They
are over 4' tall. Seems like most
times they ain't that tall,most
times closer to 18" tall. Also
they are loaded with beans. Normal
in other places? Sure looks like a
good crop. Going for chicken feed
I believe

Normal if not a bit tall for Iowa beans. So much depends on variety that it's hard to say otherwise, but I'd say normal.

Beans can be so deceiving. You don’t know what you have until the combine has left the fieldin the fall. I’m not familiar with how tall the beans grow in your neck of the woods but here in Iowa beans that grow that tall won’t yield the best. They would be all vine and few pods. A short plant with pod groups one inch apart might yield as well as a real tall plant with pod group two or three inches apart. Beans that are up to my pants pockets or maybe my waist are about as tall as I like to see them grow here in northern Iowa. What we are looking for is the amount of pods. The old timers used to say one pod per bushel was the rule. 50 pods equals 50 bushels per acre yield. That rule varies depending on population though. Next time you are near that field count the amount of pods on one plant. Check several plants because the count can vary. Three beans per pod is a good average count. Two beans is a little disappointing and four beans per pod is terrific.

All I have learned about soybeans lately is that there are 89+ MILLION acres under crop and the price dropped 20% due to the red headed guy. No Political comment made or implied, just news data.

I think the good shot at record production has as much to do with the price drop as the recent political happenings.

(quoted from post at 09:27:26 07/31/18) You have to pull one plant out of the ground to count the pods.

not trying to be a jackwagon, but why do you have to pull a plant out of the ground to count pods? I take several samples per field but i leave them in the ground and count, never any issues. again, just curious about the statement.
