Jubilee Rear Axle Shimming

So I Replaced my center Diff. housing and Diff, pressed new Differential carrier Bearing cones on Differential with matched Races pressed in Axle housings, Pressed new bearings on the Axle shafts with matching races pressed into the bearing carriers, and installed all related seals & Axle gaskets etc. Ready to start installing axles and shims and looking for any Tricks to figuring out shim placement/thickness minus the use of dial indicators, depth gauges,etc..I know there is a lot of different theories out there such as no shims between bearing carrier & backing plates on both Axles to start, 1 shim on left to start-No shims on rt,start with 1 shim on rt, NO shims between the axle housing and backing plates, etc etc etc..IT's manual info of 1 shim between backing plate and housing an 2 shims between bearing carrier/backing plates (even tho they dont tell you shim thickness). Would like to get it close without having to pull axles, hubs etc apart any more than I have to!  What's your Method and Starting point :?:  All opinions appreciated :!: Thanks 8)

You want to shim the axles (doesn't matter which one and they don't have to be the same) so that there is no preload, and just a very small amount of end play.

One method is to have the transmission in neutral, remove a shim, tighten the bolts. Keep removing shims until both axles turn the same direction.

Then add a shim, repeat until the axles turn opposite directions.

This method insures that the bearings are fully seated, and less chance they will get loose when a load is applied.

teve, im starting from scratch here, no brake backing plate or bearing carrier or shims installed yet. Thanks

That should have read: Only Center Housing & Right side Axle Housing is attached at this point. Getting ready to install Rt axle/hub assembly/components & install Differential & move on to left side housing, etc . I've heard Mixed info about being at this stage of the game. Some have said use NO shims on rt side during initial assembly, install Differential & left housing and shim left assembly. Others have said use 1 shim between the axle housing & backing plates on both sides no matter what during assembly and 1-2 shims between the bearing carrier and backing plates to start. Is the shim between the backing plate and housing usually a good idea? i've taken 3 of these axle assemblies apart and some have had them and some did'nt. Dealership said sometimes they're not required :?: Long story short- I'm trying to do it right & get them close as possible the first time.  Thanks
