Need some help with hydraulics on this tractor. Have some leaks that need to be fixed. Where suction line connects under the seat, fluid seeps out without engine running. With tractor running, fluid is running out the pump area. After removal of hood and grill, lines look to not be leaking. Does the radiator and steering shaft need to come off to remove the hyd pump? I'm thinking maybe seals and gaskets are bad, but this is our first JD and Dad (90) would like to see it operate before snowfall. Does the JD 420W service manual cover this? Please help if you can.

There is packing behind the suction tube nut under the seat, you should be able to tighten that and stop that leak. The pump can be removed without removing the radiator, but you will need to remove the generator.

Go to the "john Deere" forum, and search on "Pump".

I don't remember if the 420 manual covers the pump, or whether it says to go to the 40 manual.
