OT Lord of the Rings - The Hobbit

I am sure you hate it or love it. Yeah I know, adult fantasy. I read the book "The Hobbit" in the mid 70's. Rankin/Bass put out an animated movie of the book in 1977. john Huston voiced Gandalf and Richard Boone (Have Gun. Will Travel) voiced Smaug the dragon. I am always disappointed in the later movies because of the absence of those two great voices.. otherwise love the movies.

I remember reading "The Hobbit" when my parents were out when I was 9. The neighbor girl who was babysitting for me and my 4 siblings brought the book with her. She knew that I would be no trouble if my nose was in it (there had been an incident when she was locked out of the house while babysitting). I finished the book around 1 AM. The next day she asked me about it, and wrote her book report without having read it herself (she got an "A").

The Hobbit was simply not as good of a book as the Lord of the Rings trilogy. That said, there was enough material in it to make a decent movie. There was NOT enough material to make THREE movies, though. The Hobbit movie trilogy would have been much better if they had kept it to a single movie, but of course the producers couldn't resist the temptation of cashing in on an extra two movies.

I read the Hobbit in the early/mid 70s and enjoyed it. Never saw the movie.
Read a book and a half of the LOR trilogy and got bored with it. Gave it up.
Never saw the LOR movies till the last one came out in the rental stores. Then I did a marathon thing and watched all of them over a 3 day weekend. I enjoyed them a lot but probably won't watch them a second time.

Read the books in early 70's when I graduated from college and was looking for my 1st job. Had LOTS of free time then. Wife and kids were/are crazy about the movies (along with Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, etc). I think I've seen all of the LOR movies but in bits/pieces while they were watching them. As I get older, I just get too antsy watching most movies thinking about all the projects and stuff I need to do.

If you want a good read then pickup the big full edition paper back of The Lion Witch and Wardrobe. Think it is six or seven books. The three movies are only three of the books. The first movie was so good and all of the others are also. The one that was very funny is A Horse and his Human. Yup the young boy is the horses pet. Very funny story.

I thought overall the LOR movies were pretty good. Of course some things were left out but pretty good. I can watch them whenever they pop up in the rotation on the satellite.
The Hobbit movies were not very good. I can't watch them at all.
I read books in HS and many years back one of the kids got the set for Christmas and I reread them a couple of times.

I really enjoyed the LOR movies. The Hobbit movies were also good. I have never read the books, but plan to sometime soon, maybe this winter.
The books I really enjoyed were the books connected to the Lonesome Dove story by Larry McMurtry. It starts out with Deadman's Walk, then Comanche Moon, after that Lonesome Dove, and ends up with Streets of Laredo. These books were not written in this order, so you'll find a few glitches in the story if you do read them in that order. You'll know them when you see them.
Larry McMurtry did this with a lot of his books. He would start out with one book, then maybe write a prequel to that one. Then maybe another prequel to the second book. After that there might be a sequel to the first book which would be the third in the story line. You really don't realize this until you read a bunch of his books, then you start bunching them up into a series to read over sometime in the future. If you like to read his books can keep you occupied for some time.

When I was in 10th grade, the LOR was assigned to us to read....I got about 50 pages in, and had had enough. Went to the teacher and told him to "Fail me now, because I am not reading any more of this cr^p"! He gave me an alternate book to read....ROOTS by Alex Haley.
MUCH better book!

I've read quite a bit of LOR. Saw the first animated version and the more recent trilogies of both LOR and The Hobbit. As far as the movies, I prefer The Hobbit. Maybe it's the computer animted stuff being several gens newer or maybe it's Martin Freemans performance, but I just like it better. They're all good, far better than most of the other stuff out there today, like Harry Potter, etc.

I've read them all, including The Silmarillion, several times over the past 45 years. Tolkien's imagination amazes me. If you want to fill in the blanks and learn the "history" behind it all, you have to read The Silmarrilion. Tolkien's son published it after his father's death from notes and manuscripts that were never assembled and published.

I enjoyed all the Lord of the Rings movies and found them to basically follow the books except for a few exceptions. I also enjoyed the Hobbit movies for what they were but I was disappointed as a "purest" by everything the screen writers added to the story.
