OT--Computer protection.

I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials for several years and have been very pleased.
As some of you know, this is a free protection and I do not know how good it really is.
I was wondering if there is a better--Low Cost or free AV available.

been using COMODO for a while, no problems

While not free, I've subscribed to Norton for years. I also use Malewarebytes (free version), a little program called Unchecky that comes in handy when downloading software, and I have my browser set pretty strict. I also use an ad blocker. Lots of people frown on them, but with this super-slow internet speed, don't really have a lot of choice. There are days when I just turn the puter off cause I can't get a basic search-engine page to load!

If you really want good internet protection, can set up something called a "sandbox". Could also set up a "virtual system" on your machine. Either way, there is a barrier between your "online risks" and your computer operating system. If anything ever goes wrong, you can simply dump the virtual (or empty the sandbox) and start again from scratch without fear of damage to the OS.

As far as I know, MS Essentials is as good as any of them.

Keep your system updated and don't click on phishing links in emails.

Using an AVG pay for AV software program. Works good. Earlier before this pay for version , was using a free version of AVG and over time the computer slowed down a good bit. Found out the free version AVG was letting stuff thru to computer that it should not have slowing the system down. This new updated version allows the computer to work quickly, but it is about $49 for 12 months of protection. To me the pay for version is well worth the money. We do not do any banking online, do pay bills online, no problems. Friends have said some free AV programs like avast are good.

I am using Panda Antivirus (free version), malwarebytes ($30ish paid version) and Spybot Search and Destroy ( free version only). I never get very much in the way of malware, virus or anything else. And once in a while Windows Defender will run which is free.

We have been using the AVG paid version for 10+ years.

Only thing it has not protected us from is coffee spilled on keyboards, hinges breaking on lap tops and power cords being chewed off by puppies.

"Here is our free trial version, try it you will like it. But after a while the program will start to strangle computer performance unless you buy our $49/year program to undo what the free version virus did to your computer"

Sounds like ransomware.

Bought a maintenance subscription from Best Buy, includes Webroot Anywhere for 3 PCs. No problems with viruses, and subscription has on-line and in-store tech help, as well as damage protection. Very pleased with it.

Get a Chromebook, super simple and super cheap. It's really just a dummy terminal with a browser (Chrome) so no real virus threat. By default not even the logged in user has access to the OS, so there is no way for a virus to install itself.

These days you can do just about everything online, so no sense in having a full PC that you have to worry about updating / patching / virus protection / licensing.

If you find you do need to install a particular program you can root the Chromebook through developer mode and install Linux or even Windows theoretically. But like I said, nowadays just do everything online.
