Overdrive for Ford 4000 4 cyl 5 speed?

Is there an overdrive add on for my 4000 5 spd? It runs @ 2100 rpm @ 12 mph, too slow for some tractor rides.

Thanks, that was one suggestion, also to adjust the governor to get more rpm, which I'm reluctant to do because of age age of the tractor.

If you do go the larger tire route don't expect huge gains in speed. For example, going from 13.6-
28 to 14.9-28 tires will gain only about 5% in top speed which well under 1 mph. It would take
going all the way to 16.9-28 tires to pick up 1 mph. It's all a straight percentage - a 10%
increase in tire diameter will result in a 10% increase in speed. Before going to all the expense
and work of changing tires make sure you do the math and find out it it will really be worth it.

so much bad info on this thread..call forrester farm equip in chambersburgh,pa.theres no reason a 4000 cant go in the mid 20mph easily with your tire size, there are many aftermarket transmission gear choices that are much faster than the stock ones for the 4000 trans, also there are 5 different ring and pinion ratios, you might very well have the slowest.tractor ride guys need to pick a chassis that's popular in the tractor pulling scene, and not the antique scene, the classes with 50-80 mph wheel speed.if knocking off 1500-2000 rpm,and the difference in tire rollout, speeds of mid to upper 20s are easily obtainable at a throttle setting that's not loud.curt is the person to talk too there

reminds me of the ferguson 65 diesel I had, 12 MPH was top speed on it, turns out it had a set of planetary gears on the axles.

All MF 65s had planetary final drives inside the rear wheels. Top speed should be 15 mph without Multi-Power. More like 18 to 20 with Multi-Power.

This is why I don't go on tractor rides. They always seemed to be a race. I just want to ride along at a more reasonable speed and enjoy the wind in my face, the purr of the engine and the fields flying by at ten MPH.

I can understand that some people don't want to spend all day waiting around for the slow stragglers that top out at 5-6-7 MPH. An hour drive with a more modern tractor turns into 3-4 hours with something that can't go very fast.

A pleasant morning ride turns into an endless all-day affair for the event organizer; everyone else has loaded up and left while he gets to sit there waiting for your slow arse to cross the finish line. BTDT. Even better if you had to arrange for special permission, police escorts, traffic direction, etc. such as the Mackinac Bridge crossing. The cops absolutely LOVE you when you run 3 hours over your allotted time.

That is plenty fast for all the tractor rides I know of. But they are all antiques. If your tractor is not fast enough you need to find a different group with tractord more in your range. Sounds like you are trying to rin with the modern boys and their multi thousand dollar toys. Not something I would be interested in. Every 4 cylinder Ford, 2 cylinder John Deere, letter series IHC, 2 diget Oliver, any AC of d series back, Coop letter series or Cockshut 2 diget series fall into your speed range. The ones that want to go faster just don't like you because they consider you inferior with their 1995 year and up tractors that are probably in the hundred horsepower range. Find a different good group.

xcuse me, Leroy, but these are friends and neighbors driving all of the older tractors you mentioned. This was my first ride and I didn't like driving WIDE OPEN the whole way, not very relaxing. I'll just have to find a way to keep up or restore my H or 450G for the next ride! Thanks for all of your suggestions!

If they are getting those speeds out of some of those tractors they have the govener bypassed.
