thistles in hay field

I treat my grass with broadleaf herbicides, there are several choices, I use Trimec.

Best is spring and fall, then mow if in summer before they bloom, a couple years and they will be GONE.

One method that has been very effective for us is spraying with GrazonNext herbicide.

GrazonNext will not harm any type of grass near the thistle.

After the thistle has died and wilted over, we remove the plant with a garden hoe and pick up as many seedlings as possible.

The dead plant and seedlings goes in an empty feed sack which is placed in the trash dumpster.

Hope this helps.

I still remember the dreaded job of cutting thistles during the summer. We were given a spade that had sharpened edges, and a sack of rock salt. We would cut the thistle off at ground level, then put some of the rock salt on the stump.

(quoted from post at 20:53:51 07/05/18) Very simple cut them down before they flower. That is how I control them and have for years

Rich, it appears that the OP was looking to get rid of them as opposed to just keeping them from spreading.

Milestone spray. If it's Canadian thistle, mowing will only make them worse. They can grow from the cuttings.

I had the best luck dealing with thistles using Forefront, but I believe the last time I tried to get some it has been replaced by Grazon, which has been mentioned by others. Been using milestone this year with success against thistles, but it is not effective on woody plants when treating pasture.

Miserable rotten thistles (all kinds especially Canadians), multiflora rose, honeysuckle and poison hemlock!!!! Aghhhh!!

GrazonNext will kill broadleaf plants.

When we sell hay from a field that has been sprayed with GrazonNext, we are required to provide Supplemental Labeling information to our customer.

We specifically tell our customer not to use manure from their livestock as fertilizer in their gardens or flower beds.

Set your discbine on "shave". Cut that field early. Try for three cuttings. Hope after one of the hay crop is removed you get a very hot dry spell.

My grandfather always said the best way to get rid of thistles and johnson grass is to "die and leave them."

Well, he did, and I'm stuck fighting both haha!
