Ah youth; stinging nettle

Five years ago I hired a carpenter to update a house we just bought, by week 4 we got to know one another pretty well. One day he shows up with a thermos of tea, herbal tea. Around noon and several trips to the toilet he is walking pretty funny and in obvious discomfort. Whats your tea I ask; stinging nettle was the reply. I am detoxifying my system. But it hurts bad down there. I convince him to ditch the tea and drink several glasses of ice water. I informed him he could harvest all the nettle on the property and not have to buy it on the internet.

Stinging nettle, oh yes, I found out what they are in a humbling way. Back in the 80's I was stationed in England, attached to a Scottish Infantry Regiment. One day the unit was going to the Range to fire the newly received, to them, the 3.5 Rocket Launcher. The US Army had done away with this Weapon System many years before. I had fired this weapon many times in my earlier career. I mention this and was ask to accompany them to the range and help them with the safety aspects. Arriving at the range, they sent group of soldiers to a area where I was located, and I proceeded to take them off the trail into the bush. A few minutes past and I was about to start explaining the safety aspects when a Scottish Sergeant said to me, Sergeant Major, do you know what Stinging Nettle are? I said, no, I don't think so. He replied, in a very Scottish Brogue "Aye, by God you will, you be standing in them". Well, he was right, very painful for a couple off days and a trip to see the Doc.

Probably the first plant my boy learned of. GD singing metals he called them. I think he was around three. He's 24 now. I bet he hasn't forgot.

Growing up playing in the woods and fields,I always knew what they were, and to stay away from them. Most of the times I had tussles with them was from riding a mini bike barefooted. My toes acted just like a rake then.

Didn't have them out in NJ. At least not in the burbs. But shortly after moving to MN my dad showed me what it looked like and told me to be careful around it. 2nd early summer we where here several friends and went on an over night fishing trip. One of the city kids with us forgot toilet paper. One of the other guys told him to use leaves from plants or bushes. We still laugh about it to this day over 40 yeas later.

We called them "itch weed" when we were kids. They will take over fence lines and unused areas if you don't keep after them !
