Electrical question

Usually have a tractor question and know some of you guys can answer this. I need to shut down a couple of buildings for the winter. Planning on putting a heat tape on the incoming water line. If the tape draws one amp, what is the cost of running the tape per month. Maybe use
$.15 / KWH. The tape has a thermostat, but assume it will run most of the time. Thanks

1 amp at 120 volts is 120 watts 0. 8 hours times 120 watts equals 960 or about 1 kilowatt. So if my figuring is close about 3 kilowatts per day times .15 times equals .45 per day or about $13.50 per month. I would bet it will not run half the time though.

Going to be close to a couple of 100watt light bulbs. Maybe $10.oo for the whole winter? Maybe just a little more.

Is there any way you could use compressed air and blow the water out of the plumbing. That way you could turn everything off.

Stephen, How do you get it out of the low places?

What I did is put a valve and a coupler right next to the water cut off. Then when I shut down the water to my building in winter I just hook it up to air and open all the valves everwhere and it all but completely blows all the water out of the lines. There is never enough water left in the lines to freeze and bust any of the plumbing.

Around here it seems like a lot runs back into the low places after the air is shut off.
