Farmall 656 diesel hydro

for many years I have worked with gear drive tractors. 706/806 504/cubs and enjoyed all of them. This year my son purchased a 656 hydro and has been very happy with its performance. One question we both have is how to best brake the tractor at road speeds. we have been pulling some pretty heavy hay wagons lately and when I want to slow down from say 14 MPH to a stop should I use a combination of the brake and the hydro control or can the transmission take the strain of just slowly easing back on the stick. This machine only has about 3000 hours and I would like to keep it usable for the foreseeable future and definitely don't need a hydro failure.

thanks for your reply's and insight

I will try that in the coming weeks. When I am rolling along state road 34 there is a pretty good grade coming down to the light. with a full load of hay in the trailer she is pretty heavy. I hate to think about what is happening inside the tranny to reduce all of that energy and momentum

run at rated speed. To slow down, slowly pull back on the sr lever. It will slow down the tractor. Try it once with the tractor 'empty',just to get a feel.I've run Hydros for years.(826;1026;H100) Love em,they can do anything a gear tractor will do.Includeing tillage. Some things better.

We had a hydro loader tractor I don?t remember the model about the size of 4020 other than it wouldn?t start needed new batteries cables and starter that thing was cool . I?d like to find one in good shape for a loader tractor .

Should you really have a larger tractor to handle the load going downhill? Nothing makes my behind pucker more than being pushed downhill.
