2n generator - 10 volt output

I bought a non-running 2n Ford, two weeks ago. I had put a 6 volt battery in it and polarized it. We pull started it yesterday. The oliver amp gauge did not show anything to be happening. I checked the battery with my voltmeter and it showed that I was getting 9.6 to 10 volts of output from the generator. The battery is not in very good condition and I am sure that it is not in a fully charged state. Would that have prompted the higher output or is the third brush needing to be adjusted? If this tractor sat for a Long time, would the generator need more time to settle in and to charge at a more normal rate? I am happy that it is working.

A poor or internally broken battery will not let the generator system settle at its true voltage. Put a good battery in it then see where you aer at. Jim

I think it might be a good idea to put a good 6 volt on the system. See what you get and hope it stays no higher than around 8 volts. With altinators you can get run away like that. You could have stuck contact points in your regulator. See what the others say.

I thought the battery may have been the problem, but of course I really do not want to have to buy another one. This battery has never been used to crank a tractor. It just holds the battery cables in place, for the non functioning generators on my F-20.

AaaaaHaaaaa!!! Go to Harbor Freight and buy one of these. Not even 30 bucks and it will tell you so much about your charging system. Read the owners manual and fool around with a couple of known good batteries. Here is a pretty good U'tube video on it. Very quick way to find what is messed up.
how too

ad battery. Forget the comment about stuck contacts in you VR, as you don't have a VR.

The gen is prolly fine, it's putting out. The VR will need to be adjusted right. Happens when they sit a long time, the relays inside get corroded. Also should be set with a decent or new batt.

Unless some one has put on a VR the voltage and amps are ajusted with the third brush with a screw driver on the side of the generator. It should only have a cut out.

2N has no VR, as has been stated.
