Riding the antique shovel

The guys in the antique machinery association let me climb aboard and film. Here is a short video of the Bucyrus Erie in action. These guys resurrect massive pieces of iron,
bring them back to life then play in the dirt.

Video is about three minutes. I'll do the other machines next time around.

This is a question that I've asked myself about videos more times than I can remember:

Why the "music"? I want to hear the machine working, not some random noise that someone thinks qualifies as music.

Love the subject, and it looks like a great machine but can't bear to listen to the soundtrack.

Nice video, but I wanted to hear the machine, no some random banging and clanging background music. Don?t mean to be critical, just would have liked to hear the cables run and the winch strain , that sort of thing.

I was able to ride in the Big Musky here in Eastern Ohio for 4 hours one nite back in the 80's It was an amazing experience..

That tractor took lots of out of the box thinking when it was designed and built. My uncle was a rep for Bucyrus-Erie when that was built, but that was not one of his sales. He was involved in those wagons that toted the extension cords around. It had a 220 yard bucket, and that is all that's left of it.It is on display on the site.I remember him telling the family how much electricity that machine consumed in a day,it just seemed astronomical to a little kid.

It was a "BIG" machine,, it came in on rail cars I think and was built on site, it was a walking shovel.I think the only one of that model built..

I worked at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville for twenty eight years. The mining engineering department had a framed picture on the wall of the Big Muskie. There was a picture of a smaller machine on the wall too. One or the other worked for the Sahara Coal company when the picture was taken. They fazed out the mining department a few years after I started work there. I sure hope they didn't throw that picture in the trash.

LOL you call that loud rock music? thanks you made my Day! Best laugh I have had in a while thats Not rock music to me not at all ,,

We were hauling coal down in that area when it was in operation along with the other large stripping shovels . At night up on top of the hills you could see them working for miles .

A local perfusionist found one of those in Missouri, trucked it to his 10 acre ranchette in Butler county Kansas, got the thing to run and work, then used it to dig three ponds on his property. It is now yard art.
