Bush Hog ideas??

So, last week the threads on the spindle for this wheel stripped and the cotter key wore out and the wheel fell off. I put it back together, added a washer behind the nut and used a heavy wire to hold the castellated nut on. Bush Hog wants $300+ for the weldment that includes the spindle shaft. I'd like to find a better solution...maybe try to find a spindle and cut the old one off and weld another in? Maybe a trailer repair parts place would have one...it might even be the same as those little four bolt hub trailers. Any other ideas?

Use a die grinder to smooth down the remaining threads, and use a die to rethread the spindle to the next smaller (maybe metric) thread. It does not
look like too much of an issue. Jim

As much money as you make with the Bush Hog and considering down time costs you time and money the thing to do is just buy the new correct parts you'll probably be sorry if you
don't.

I suspect you could use a weld on spindle.

Might want to get the hub assembly to go with it as the bearings may be different.

There are also 2 different hole pattern diameters, be sure it matches your wheel.

But watch your costs, if this is something you will have to have done it could easily exceed the cost of buying it from the dealer.

C'mon people. You already KNOW the answer.

$17 plus $13 for the bearings, a bit of cutting and welding and back in business. If that one doesn't match the hub, there's a dozen other options. It's all on amazon.

Yeah, the shaft is 1 1/2"

I might try that, worst that could happen is it strips again, then go to plan B.

Well the matching arms have some slop, so would probably want to replace them at the same time...both sides, new bearings and seals, hubs and tires...looking at $1500

Do a search for"Front Wheel Clamp Lock Nut"
This site might have them but Stieiners have a better picture .
part # might be ABC254.
I have used one on tractor front for nearly 50 years.

I agree. Just rethread to a smaller size. FARM SUPPLY STORE will have new weld on hub and spindle also.

I'm a certified skinflint - there's absolutely no way that I would spend $1500 to fix that issue.

Maybe replace with fork casters? Two yrs ago, I
replaced the casters & wheels on our 6? Woods
finish mower with parts from the company linked
below. $180 and some change covered everything
including shipping. Good folks, helped with my
questions, too.

Eldon here is a picture of the nut Dunner was talking about. I have had great luck with them. Just clean the threads up the best you can and thread the clamp nut on and tighten the outer nut down. They hold well. The other type works well too. Look under clamping spindle nut.

Farm stores around here have spindles just like what you
want cut the weld drive the old one out put the new one in and
weld er up

The top picture JDSELLER showed is what I have used with very good results too. Our local Ford tractor dealer stocks them as they were factory equipment on some Fords.
