1935-36 John Deere essay contest on rubber tires, in MN

Hello,

A friend is researching a contest run by John Deere in either 1935 or 1936. The contest required some sort of essay about the benefits of rubber tires. The winner was a farmer (I assume) from New York Mills MN. Supposedly the winner picked up the tractor in southern MN at some sort of JD facility, almost at the IA border, and drove it home.

Anyone know of the contest and what the town and JD facility would have been in southern MN at that time?

At this time I have no additional info to help narrow things down.

Thanks

Newspaper search shows several essay contests in that era sponsored by tire manufacturers. Nothing by Deere and the prizes were smaller cash
awards.

Thanks for the reply.

Where and how did you search newspapers online? I went to the MN Historical Society website, and 1) Could not find a list of what papers they have archived and 2) They only have a few online.

I also looked at the New York Mills Dispatch website, no search function, and I searched the Fergus Falls newspaper website, and found nothing relevant.

Thanks

I asked a friend if he would mind doing a quick search for you. He's a Moderator on another forum and is the King of online newspaper searching! Well, he struck out.

I didn't fully understand his reply, but sounded like he didn't have access to a lot of the online papers for MN during that time - maybe he would have to be a subscriber?

Sorry, no help here either.

I have a subscription for work to a national archive of papers. Costs a few hundred a year. They have a wide selection, but not even close to
having all the small town papers.

I've been to the MN Historical Society too, digging through the microfilm. That's slow work even when you know exactly what you're looking
for.

Thanks for you time and efforts guys. I really appreciate it.

I am going to try and get more details from my friend and perhaps e-mail the Otter Tail County Historical Society.
