Dealer rant

I went to my local Vemeer dealer and got two parts that were wrong. It was my mistake. They had the parts on the shelf and they still charged a 20% restocking fee. I understand a fee on special order parts but have not ever heard of this on parts the dealer has in stock. It was two days after getting them that I returned them. This dealer has poor service and I will never go back as there is a much better dealer 20 miles away. Does any other equipment dealers charge restock fee on in stock parts? These were pickup parts for a baler that they sell a lot of. I called them up and was told that is their policy and I replied I will never deal there again. Tom

I think it's a fairly standard, and justified, practice to charge a restocking fee for returned parts for whatever reason. Besides taking the parts back, there is a certain amount of time and paper/computer work involved in adding the parts back into inventory.

i agree. not unreasonable to charge a restock fee but i think for off the shelf parts 20% is too high.

it does take time/effort to put them back in inventory and it discourages people from ordering the wrong part.

it would be worse for the dealer 20 miles further to also have a restocking fee ... right?

now having said that a lot of places do not charge a restocking fee.

I ordered a cell phone battery online without looking at the instructions to install it 1st. it involves light brain surgery to install the battery and probably a good chance i would goof it up and then have no phone... it wasn't too high $25 w/shipping. for me to return it - more shipping - restock fee i would get about $7.00 back. still $7 but hardly worth the hassle.

You did the right thing. It took the counter guy 2 minutes to return that item to inventory. 2 minutes that he would have spent telling his buddies about some guy that returned an item. And they wonder why people don't hesitate to order merchandise from the internet.

Better than the local used auto salvage parts yard, you tell them what you want they sell it to you,you realize you asked for the wrong part you now have a spare. No returns.I can see a restocking fee as if there wasn't one some people would just get a bunch of parts for what they are working on and return what they don't use. Also it was your mistake not their mistake you got the wrong parts in the first place.

So if they can charge for returning the parts they have on the shelf, they should pay for your time and gas when they screw up?? They should have taken them back no problem NO CHARGE!!

If you were exchanging them for the right parts, settle the difference, then no restock fee.

If they offered to order the right parts, settle the difference, no restock fee.

But if you wanted a refund, then I can see some charges, especially if they were on a credit card. I suspect they would loose the cc fee, maybe even get charged again for removing the charges.

Still 20% should be reserved for special orders.

Hi the problem could be they stock say 60 of them and the ones you took could already be replaced on the shelf to. I know lots of our local dealers have a daily stock order if they want to use it and I can get out off paying freight going that way for 2 days wait . if they go machine down and guaranteed next day delivery if the parts close it costs me the freight.

There could be a reason other than them just being greedy. Always remember you need dealers more than they need you. If you don't go back or the next one makes you mad and you quit It cost you more having no parts or driving further. for every guy that gets mad and quits them somebody else is usually walking in when you leave.

I've worked shop and parts and been on the customer side to from good and bad experiences. Today you were smart so you think, I've had other dealers even call me to order parts for them when they made the OEM warehouse guy mad and he wouldn't help them with something unusual. When I called in he just said wouldn't it of been so easy if the guy that needs that part hadn't annoyed me L.O.L
Regards Robert

For me back in the day, if it was a shelf stock item with a replacement order, no restock. If a special order and your fault, vendor restock, my restock and freight back to vendor. Might as well keep your mistake and live with it.

Twenty percent restocking fee is actually very reasonable. For industrial equipment 40 percent is the standard restocking charge. The supplier has time invested in selling the part, now you add extra time and cost for checking over the returned product, returning the item to inventory and carrying that extra inventory until someone else orders the same item. Some may be sold the next day, some may never be sold except as scrap. The supplier also has to warranty the returned item, some of which are no longer in the same condition as when they first went out the door. The twenty percent restocking fee is an average to cover the dealer's risk.

If it was returned two days later, it has already been replaced on the shelf and paid for,now the dealer has money on the shelf waiting for sale.

Worked in parts for 40 years now and have never worked at a place that charges a restock fee on items in stock. Usually give them 30 days to return. What a rip off ! Do their receipts state that policy on them ? Place I'm at now does one on special order parts as long as we can return them to our vendor. Also on anything in stock returned past 30 days. We wave this alot though.

It is just the way the world works. The dealer is running a business not a charity. Next time be more careful when you specify waht you want. It is not just all about what is cost the dealer (if anything) on this one transaction, is it about forcing customers to be correct the first time. As noted by others, there is a cost in computer time and paperwork for the dealer, too.
