Brass shaving in hydraulic fluid

Probably chewed up bake linings, if still the original style, or mulched thrust washers in the deferential.
 
I am curious as to how the brake where so bad on these tractor friend of mine is looking to buy a 4010 and dosent know much about looking for issue with component. He said that the brake grind really bad but work meaning they lock both tires when Turing really sharp while braking didn’t know how or what makes these wear.
 
The brakes aren't necessarily "bad". In addition to usage and wear, they "live" in oil and sometimes come apart with age and some say using the wrong hydraulic oil/transmission fluid hastens their demise. (The last 4010 is what, 57years old!) Things don't least forever!

Some of these machines will chatter and carry on even when the pads are OK.

If his are REALLY bad, meaning the brakes have gone "metal-to-metal" he's setting himself up for $$$ transmission and hydraulic issues if he's continuing to run it with steel grindings in the transmission.

This might sound dumb but had a guy tell me that parts for a 4010 /4020 were some what obsolete thought to my self that he was crazy, but to answer what I wanting to know how readily available are parts for those tractors

Checking on JD parts it appears brake linings & disk are available for a 4010
