Is there any effective (that being the key word) ant killer that can be sprayed with a tow behind sprayer or spread with a spreader that will kill those small ones that are killing large swaths of grass by eating the roots?

The only thing I found works good is drain oil. I had a ant hill about two foot across and a foot high could not kill it for the life of me. Tried baits, poisons you name it. Dumped 10 gallons of drain oil all over it right before a heavy rain. Did the trick. Although am I safe to assume these ants are in your lawn? Oil would do a number on the grass. In my case they had already killed the grass so I wasnt worried about that.

I use OrthoMax granular in a spreader to kill fire ants and to kill grubs, it cuts down on armadillo and mole damage. Terro is another good one for those little black ants. It is available in granular, spray,or liquid bait. My dog ate some of the OrthoMax when I wasn’t looking and got very sick, if you have pets be very careful with pesticide and herbicide on your lawn. I am posting this from an IPad, I hope it is readable.

Maybe diatomaceous earth won't hurt pets might even deworm them and get rid of ants . i think wally world has it .
Also maybe some chickens be free entertainment and eggs

I have had good results with Bifin. Don't know active ingredient, don't think it takes available as generic yet. It's expensive but it kills mole crickets and a host of other bugs as well as fire ants.
