Hesston 1120 crank assembly

How warm should the bearings on the crank assembly get after running? When I finished cutting hay the other day it was HOT! The bearings between the belt pulley and the swaybar where hot enough to make water steam. I took it apart figuring I had the nut too tight. I replaced the rear seat and the bearings did not have any color change to them. I kept the bearings and put the packing nut looser. Now I ran it for about 15 minutes test and it is warm to almost uncomfortable. I listened the nut even more to the point that that it is looser than fenger tight. It still is getting warm.

Is this just the nature of the beast. I have had this mower for a couple of years and just must have never paid too much attention to the temperature of those bearings before.

And they do have plenty of grease.

Warm to the touch I'd have to say. They do like their grease,I know that. I always pumped mine full until I heard it crackling at the seal.

I'd check the knife bar and see if it's moving freely. Theres a lot of motion in the sway bar assy, but if the bearings are good it shouldn't get real hot. I'd suspect something downstream is causing the stress that caused the heating.

The knife bar is the free. None of the guards get warm after running. The races had some pits in them but I wouldn't think that would make it hot, would it?

I?ve never really checked my Hesston 1110, which is identical to your 1120 except 7ft cut.

Worse case you could probably replace the bearings. Should be easy enough to cross. Better that than a seized bearing. If it?s still heats after
that - not sure what?s going on.

I cut another three acres with it and it didn't get as hot. I am going to replace the races and the one bearing that I didn't already replace.

If the race is pitted, then yeah it could account for some of it. It's like hitting a pothole off center, you still feel it. Could be part of it.

Just to follow up, I replaced the races and the one bearing that I hadn't replaced the first go around. After mowing for a little over an hour the housing was about 60-70 degrees above ambient. It was 160 and close to 100 outside. Next day it was in the mid 80's and it registered in the 140 degree range. Thanks for the replies.
