recommendation for baler tractor

i am looking for some advise/recommedations on a tractor to run a baler(JohnDeere 568).
Must 120hp minimum
must have cab and a/c and the be around $8 - $10 k
What would you buy and what would you avoid and why
thanks

120 h.p. or more and $10k or less, you're looking at older models...which means working a/c would be a big maybe. In Fords, the
price and a/c requirement would limit you to pretty much only a 9700, or maybe a TW20 or TW30. I'd look them over really close if
they were $10 or less, though. Yes, some 9600's had a/c, but I don't remember the last time I saw one with working a/c.

I would recommend a 4430 JD. The extra you
will have to pay will be worth it. If can
get by with a 1000 rpm pto. A 4630 can be
bought cheaper. A friend of mine got a 4630
this spring for 10. Ran this spring with no
problems. Yes it needed ac work.

I seriously doubt you are going to find a tractor in
that size , with a cab and air for the money you are
willing to pay, that will actually go to the field and do
the job. And if you do find such an animal, my guess
is it will start to let you down and start costing big $$
for repairs, and parts. If the dealers that built the
tractor still carry any parts for it. Any thing over 25
years, is becoming a crap shoot. You might find a
old Case, Ford , AC, IH ,or a White, even a Massey,
but you are , in my opinion, just risking your money
and are likely going to end up with a money pit, or a
really big boat anchor. For what you are asking in a
tractor, you might get something from the early 90?s
for $25 grand that can fill the job, but still a crap
shoot.

If you drop the working A/C requirement you'll probably be able to find something in pretty good shape, there is a White 2-150 on CL now with a cab looks good and ad says its in good shape for $6,000,bank the rest and use it for repairs if needed.

There are ( 11 ) White 2-135's and ( 11 ) White 2-155's on tractor house now some in your price range with high engine hrs. Good tractors in their day.

You can guy a whole lot of Allis Chalmers in that price range. They are a good reliable outfit. Any of the
7045's on up to the 8000 series would fall into that range. The 86 series IHC should fit into that price
range. There are a few MF that would suit your needs. What kind of dealers do you have close to you?? That
will need to be looked at.

There are three Ford 9700s in your price range on Tractor House right now. The great thing about these older tractors is the lack electronics!

That's one White I'd avoid like the plague. You'd need a lot more savings than that if that 585 Moline engine ever let loose.

I am a Deere person but the best tractor you will find to fit what you want to spend would be a 2-135 White. They are a good tractor but you still might be a little short on money to get a real good one. There might be a few Case,Massey and Allis tractors as well. Sometimes you can buy IH 86 series for that price but not real good ones. You may need to spend more money to get something dependable. Tom

As long as those motors aren't used for hard work like tillage think they are fine since he's only going to pull a baler it'll hardly know its back there hooked to it.I know where there is one been going for years.

AC 7045 on Alberta Kijiji in that price range. Bonus if it is a power shift. I have run a 7040 PD. It is not quite as handy but does the
job.

Actually it was $12000 but only 6400 hrs and has a dozer blade attachment for that kind of money. Can't get more tractor for the money than that. Get it bought. Buddy has 8 AC tractors including a 7040 with over 20K hours and an 8070 FWD that rolled 13000 hrs when I was using it a couple weeks ago so don't take any guff from the anti AC crowd.

Why do you need 120 hp? Are you haying in big hills? Most round balers of that size get by with 70-80 pto hp.

I wondered too,but I won't argue. I've baled thousands,if not tens of thousands of bales with my 2-135 White, but now that I have a 2-105,I really prefer it on the baler. Not that the 2-135 isn't nimble for its size, but the 105 is a lot less tractor to get rolling after you eject a bale.

Hard to go wrong with a 2-135. Good power, weight and reliability. Hard to beat the three speed over/under in changing conditions too.

Around here the only tractor at that price would be a 1070 case Or 1270. I have one that is decent I want to sell;.
in Manitoba nobody seems to want them.

I used to have a JD 4230C with a 530 baler (5x6 rolls), 100 PTO hp, 4000 hr. range. It would start a little grunting sometimes on hills when topping out the roll. I wouldn't want less for that sized roll, and surely if in hilly terrain.

If the baler has a 1000 RPM PTO shaft you could look into a JD 4630, Case 1370. The 1000 RPM only PTO hurts the price on those tractors. Under $10K could be tough to find a tractor in good condition with a decent cab and working A/C. If you don't need a quiet cab, maybe look at IH 1066, 1256, 1456, 1466 or JD 4620, 5020.

White's a good choice. Had Oliver/White for ~20 years on a baler. Miss them. Using a Deere 4240 now. Not an IH guy in the older stuff (actually hate 86 series and older), but some 5088 are near that price range. Some parts are hard to find, but they are around, the tractor has a following, and decent tractor that can be reliable and go a lot of hours if maintained. Just make sure the rear end has been updated, there's usually a punch next to the serial number if it's had the work done. Triple r tractors should have most parts I'd think. Locally, several of them around, and the local mechanics seem to like working on them.
