It looks like someone before forgot to put it in. Has anyone worked on one before. Flat side to axial or reversed. Thanks

Typically for a woodruff key a rotary cutter is used to cut the cavity in the shaft to accept the round portion of the key and a broaching tool is used to cut the flat faced half of the keyway in the gear or pulley.

You will probably find you can only install it one way which will be with the round side to the shaft and it will have to be put in before you put the assembly together.

Half moon Keys (Woodruff Keys) can only be installed one way. There must be a "moon" shaped recess milled into either the shaft (most common by far) or
the hole. If there is no evidence of a recess (not slot) then the key is probably a standard square keyway style, or a tapered locking Gib style key.

That's called a woodruff key. It will only go in one way.

That area takes a lot of stress. It is essential that the key fits the key ways tightly. If it has sheared, or been run loose and wallowed out, eventually the parts will have to be replaced or the key way machined to the next oversize.

Tighten it securely!

In my answer, I forgot to mention that a woodruff style key can be considered a "hidden key" in that it can't be seen from the outside unless one looks
directly down the broached slot. Sticking a wire down the slot can "find" the key. Jim

If the key was missing, I doubt very much that the tractor would be drivable! There would be nothing to hold the spindle in alignment, and it
would undoubtedly allow the wheel to turn sideways, likely resulting in a broken spindle or worse.

If we are talking about the same thing here being a key that indexes the steering arm to the top of the spindle then I would think you should only have to remove the steering arm, install the woodruff key in the spindle and reinstall the steering arm.

Is your steering arm moving around, leading you to believe the key is missing or is it possible there is a key already in the spindle but because it does not protrude to the top of the steering arm and you can not see it you believe it is missing?

YES WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE SAME THING. MY BROTHER WAS DRIVING IT AND THE SPINDLE BROKE, WHEEL CAME OFF.
