i have a 4450 and i changed the alternator but the gauge still does not go past the half way mark..any ideas on what the problem is ?

Have you had the batteries checked? When you changed the alternator, how were the connections at the alternator? Paul

If the batteries were charged when you put the alternator on, it is likely doing what it needs to do. At 1/2 throttle, the voltage across the battery
should be 14.2 or 14.6 volts with the lights off. if so it is fine. Jim

The gauge is a volt meter. They are notorious for be wrong. They do not show a value jsut green and red.

Get a volt meter and check the voltage at the batteries when it is not running. Then start it and see what the voltage at the batteries is. I should be higher than your non running reading. It should get up to 13.5 to 14 volts when running wide open.

Also you can have wiring harness issues to where your getting voltage at the batteries but not at the dash cluster. That type of problem is more than I will type about without more information.
