There is a weep hole in the pump housing.

It's there to let any coolant that might seep by drip out instead of getting in the bearing.

Once the seal fails the coolant will drip or stream out the hole. Time for a seal replacement/rebuild, or pump replacement.

Well, the pump is mounted to the front of the engine block, and if memory serves me correctly, the top of the pump body goes above the top of the block so part of it sits in front of the cylinder head when everything is bolted down. That gap you refer to is just that, a space between back of the top part of the pump and the front of the cylinder head. A space that is just "there" and it has no function, it's just a space between two parts. Hold two of your fingers apart to create a V-sign. That space between your fingers ...... same thing.
