How about a thread about one's most memorable tear jerking songs.

Country or otherwise, the list is endless.

Here's one of my most memorable.

Depends on what makes you cry. Not long after nine eleven,Johnny Cash The Ragged Old Flag did it to me.

Here's one for you. Alison Krauss. Like they say about Bluegrass,is you want to be happy, listen to the music,if you want to be sad, listen to the words.
Jacobs Dream

Slaid Cleaves doing,The Green Mountains and Me.A fellow I trucked with would turn the radio off whenever the song,Teddy Bear, came on.That song bothered him.

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" George Jones.
"The Little Girl and the Dreadful Snake" Bill Monroe.
Either one would bring a tear to a glass eye.

Here are a couple that get to me.

Vince Gill's Go Rest High on that Mountain

Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss doing Whiskey Lullaby

I held this one back, folks.

In my opinion, there is no greater tear jerker song than Lili Marlene. Bear with me. I will post explanation.

This song, originally written in prose in by a German Soldier on the Western Front in WWI, was set to music in the 1930s. The 1939 German version recorded by Lale Andersen was subsequently broadcast from Vienna (Prague?) to German soldiers in Northern Africa. The transmissions were received by both German as well as other soldiers and the song became a favorite of all soldiers on all fronts (absent the Japanese) in WWII.

Lili Marlene is a tragic love song about a German soldier who would meet his girl friend beneath the gas light at the barracks gate each evening. Knowing that he would soon be sent to fight somewhere, he feared that he would loose both his girl and his life. Of course, he lost both.

Lili Marlene was recorded in about 20 languages in WWII, and, to this day, is known as the soldiers song.

The link below is a German version probably by Lale Andersen.

I will post both a Wikipedia link and a popular English language link subsequently.

Lili Marlene

Below is a Wikipedia link about Lili Marlene.

The song, also popularly known as Lili of the Lamp Light, was adored by tens of millions of soldiers during WWII and became known as THE soldiers song, the most popular soldiers song in human history.

In my opinion, there can be no greater tear jerker.

Statler Bros. - Silver Medals and Sweet Memories. and after my wife's passing, a Girl I Used to Know, Tompall Glaser

Below is a link to a very popular English language version of Lili Marlene by Vera Lynn.

Vera Lynn was very popular during WWII and thereafter. She became known as The Armed Forces Sweetheart.

She visited Egypt and India during WWII to perform for the soldiers and was subsequently knighted by Queen Elizabeth for her contribution toward the war effort.

Now over 100, Dame Vera Lynn is still living.

Enjoy.

My late sister had a song called, "How Far Is Heaven" on a CD they made when she had her polka band. It was about a little girl whose daddy had died and she asked her mom how far it was to heaven because she wanted to go see him.

I don't know how the gal that sang it could get through it without breaking down. And that's the only place I've ever seen that song.

An unexpected source, indeed, Steve.

I had not heard it before, though I am a Jimmy Buffet fan, if not as parrot head.

Somebody help me out here. It was a song recorded by a pop star quite a while back and was re recorded by a country group or duo recently. Song was about a cowboy who's rodeo queen wife had left him and their daughter. He and the daughter were still riding the circuit.

One of the local stars sang it live at the Renfro Valley Barn Dance last time we were there. It brought tears to my eyes thinking about the years that I raised my daughter alone.

I'm thinking it was Front Range that rerecorded it. Still can't think who recorded it in the first place.

Ahhh, yes... a Jimmy tear-jerker (he actually has several of them)

And don't forget: Sending the Old Man Home - also by Jimmy

SENDING THE OLD MAN HOME ? by JIMMY BUFFETT
'Cause they're sendin' the old man home
Faraway (Faraway)
Faraway (Faraway)
Another life so very far away
They'll tear down the officers clubs
And write off the overdue subs
So let's drink to their memories
Our heroes and our pals
To those crazy Navy flyers
To those swell Hawaiian gals
The sailors will dance in the street
Then they'll mothball the whole damn fleet
We'll only have the picture books
Of land, and sea, and foam
'Cause they're sendin' the old man home
He'll only have his memories
Or great books by James Jones
'Cause they're sendin' the old man home

That's the one! Love it! I was thinking somebody recorded it years ago,but maybe not. Great song. Thanks for finding it.

The most relevant tear-jerkers for me of late, are:

BIRDS AND CHILDREN FLY AWAY ? by CAL SMITH
Don?t cry Mama, birds and children fly away?

ALL THE TIMES ? by THE STATLER BROTHERS
When those dresses you once wore
with pride - are dated, frayed and tight?
And what little bit of hair
I have left, is turning white?
And the kids we took such care to raise,
Are taking care of us?
We?ll smile about the times we had ?
That no one knows but us.
Times may come and times may go
through stages, phases and fads??
But we?ll be here as souvenirs
of all the times we had.
The house we built with so much love,
The kids will sell in time?
Suppertimes and Christmas Eves,
Birthdays and nursery rhymes?
And should a tear roll down my cheek ?
And someone wonders why?
You and only you will know
What makes a grown man cry.
Times may come and times may go
through stages, phases and fads??
But we?ll be here as souvenirs
of all the times we had.

I got a couple. One pretty traditional

I'll tell you what, anything she sings is Heaven sent, but that particular song is a true story. There's a monument to where they found the Cox kids that she sings about. Knowing that and then hearing her sing that haunting song is about more than a guy can take.

One more that literally brings tears to my eyes: Mansions of the Lord.

Another that can fit into the tearjerker category as well as the best instrumental category: Ashokan Farewell by Jay Unger and Molly Mason.

Thanks for that link. Brought back a great memory. I went to the Kerrville, TX folk music festival and she performed there and brought the house down. She was about 12 yrs old but even then her performance was magic.

We drove all the way to Lexington Ky to see her and Union Station a few years back. It was worth it.

The saddest song ever [and I don't know the name] is about the little orphan boy that nobody will adopt because he is blind . Man that song is sad.

Ray Price all dolled up with his black tux and huge bow tie on stage......"For The Good Times". It's on Youtube.
