5410 New Idea Mower--how to get the lift cylinder apart?

Need to replace the shaft seal. The ring unscrews fine. In the very narrow gap can see some sort of snap ring. Does this need to be removed with a special tool. Gap is very narrow. The gland does not move down the bore more than 1/8 inch so tapping it down to get to the ring seems to be not the way to go. If you have worked on a New Idea please give me the combination to this lock. THANKS. LB

Is that one of those that you have to go in through the hole where the hose hooks on? If it is,you have to stick a small screwdriver in there and pry the snap ring off toward front of the cylinder. There'll be a deeper beveled groove for it to drop in to so it doesn't go off the back of the rod like it would if you went to the back of the cylinder.

I know that type. Used on my AC 200 lift cylinders. This thing has a very small hole. 1/4 inch at max. 3/8 hose. Checked that route out and didn't find anything positive there. Thanks for the idea anyway. LB
